It's a tricky balancing act... millions of people are about to face May without a paycheck or significant financial support, and the economy teeters more towards a depression (not just a recession) the longer this goes on. But a second wave of this thing will kill TENS OF THOUSANDS more people who would have otherwise lived if we had reduced it's spread a little bit further first.

I don't envy the expert advisors trying to weigh it up...

Right, the answer isn't as simple one way or the other. But you have one side who's like "I nEeD a HaIrCuT," and the other who doesn't seem to realize the serious implications of keeping everything shut down much longer.

I mean, the doctors advising don't GAF about the economy. They'd encase us all in concrete for a year, if they could. That's what irritates me when people try to sound smart and go "We HaVe tO lIsTeN tO tHe DoCtOrS!" they think in a total vacuum.

I would instead agree to the government doing more stimulus bills so people can pay their rent & keep their small businesses. And also for the government to do universal healthcare so that people dont lose access to healthcare in case of unemployment. Its so dumb that in the U.S. (the best country on earth) the government doesnt look after its own citizen and leaves it up to employers.

people deserve to make a living. the problem is the government hates giving you money. this is 100% the governments responsibility. they should be rolling out some form of UBI for a crisis like this. I dont blame people for wanting to go out and make money, I blame the government for being irresponsible shitheads

I don't think I can in good conscience tell people that they should be legally prevented from earning a living when I have a job that enables me to continue earning the same paycheck from home. Granted if the economy completely collapses I will lose that paycheck eventually, but right now it would be too easy for me to say that everybody else should stay home while I continue working as usual.

For how long? If the government just hands people money for long enough, the dollar will eventually implode.

The one outcome that we can't have right now is a significant uptick in inflation. In that case the Fed can either a) do nothing and let it get out of control; or b) jack up interest rates and initiate a deflationary debt bomb that makes 2008 look like nothing.

If we just print money and hand it out for that long, I think we might end up with inflation. Especially if there is a major supply chain disruption because youd have more money chasing fewer goods.

until the crisis is over and people can get back to their jobs safely. we're supposedly the greatest country on earth. if you can't let people leave their homes to work but you also haven't frozen all bills (rents and mortgages and utilities) then how the fuck do you expect people to pay for things like food/etc? you're stuck between giving people money or making everything free. blah blah inflation who gives a fuck

It's probably something that's best left to individual counties and business owners to do on their own judgement.

I'd like to believe people will do the right thing or at least get shamed into being aware of others. You'll have idiots and weak fortitudes, so we need to extra judge and shame people

Any job that can be done from home, should be done from home. Any work that can be done while social distancing should allow workers to return under strict safety guidelines. Anyone who can't meet that criteria should receive government assistance.

This all-or-nothing outlook will break this country.

the Fed cant afford to increase rates anymore like they did back when Volker ended stagflation decades ago because there is so much more debt in the economy now.
Doesn't matter. If people are still dying then it just needs to be shutdown until it's over completely. End of discussion.

The depression is going to happen no matter what now but it'll be worse if more people continue to get sick because we reopen things too soon. I thin at some point people need to think about finding jobs that can be done remotely because many jobs and industries may never come back and that's just the world we live in now. People and society need to adapt.

To get a job that you could work remotely youll probably need a year-2 year cert/degree. Thats on the minimal end. So time and investment on your end, which people dont have now. And even then, to become a viable employee, youd probably need a couple months of in person training.

Youre just gonna end up with mass homelessness etc in a few months anyway at this rate. People dont have time to adjust and you cant just be plopped into a remote specific job and be expected to be efficient.

Not to mention, white collar remote workers are feeling the burn too now. Layoffs are already starting on the second waves. Companies are starting to cut down to core personnel.
