I don't know when it gets good, but I agree with you that season 1 is terrible. Too many weird episodes and dated celebrity references.

IIRC maybe around season 3 or 4 is when they stop doing so much of that.

Although it's a pretty inconsistent show, many episodes are just awful, and sometimes the writing shows how stupid Trey and Matt are. I'm not a fan of the recent seasons at all.

But sometimes, some episodes are really good. I love the one where Cartman is desperately coming out of his robot costume to eat toothpaste LMAO

Man I can't even imagine going back to watch the first few seasons and I love South Park. It's very much a show that grew up along with its audience. I'd guess around season 4ish is when they move past the early years? I'd have to check out a list of episodes to find out when they hit their stride with stuff that's aged well and still holds up.

The rainforest episode is a 10/10 episode of any show btw

The weird political stuff starts in season 8 and rarely stops.

Peak South Park is from seasons 4 to 10.

Then it just becomes erratic as fuck with some really good episodes surrounded by a bunch of lazy ass episodes.

Took a sharp nose dive when they started serializing everything.

The second half of the most recent season dropped the serialized crap and released a couple hilarious episodes. I fucking love the Strong Woman episode.

I like seasons 1-3 but theyre definitely not as accessible as the later episodes and the vibe is very different.

S4 is where the show really starts to find its identity and S5-9 is the sweet spot imo. I think the show jumped the shark really bad with S10 & thats where I stop watching, but most seem to disagree.

IMO peak South Park is the episodes from 1999-2009. Like someone else mentioned, the earliest seasons are kind of weird. After 2009 there are still good episodes here and there. But IMO the show's been pretty awful the last 5-6 years. The seasons are now continuous storylines (as upposed to unique individual episodes) that rely too heavily on current events. Also the focus of the show has moved away from the children to Randy Marsh (Stan's dad). He was funny before and became popular because of it, but now it just feels like they're shoving him down our throats.

But at it's peak South Park is really great. Definitely some dud episodes here and there but most are at least good and some are amazing.
