You could make a case for soccer having surpassed hockey, though MLS is not really close to the NHL's popularity. Liga MX and the Premier League are closer in terms of viewership, and international soccer (i.e. the US national teams and the World Cup) can draw much larger audiences than any hockey broadcast.
I used to be practically obsessed with soccer viewership numbers around 2015 or so. I had a spreadsheet and shit. Some of the figures will have changed in the years since, but to my recollection... Average MLS regular season national broadcast: ~200k viewers Average NHL regular season national broadcast: ~400k viewers Average EPL broadcast: ~400k viewers Average Liga MX regular season broadcast: ~500k viewers Stanley Cup Finals games get in the 3-6 million range, which is higher than any club soccer events (Liga MX's final is usually the most watched game of the year), but lower than World Cup broadcasts, especially if the US is playing NASCAR also has a strong case, even with its decline in viewership over the past decade. --- kin to all that throbs ...
