Unless something comes along, like a force of nature or a super vaccine, that completely eradicates the disease then we need to accept it that people are going to get sick and live with it. Especially something that has a 98% survivability rate.

It's the overwhelming of hospitals that is the real danger. It drives legitimate fear which crashes everything.

Can someone explain to Duncan's hardheaded ass that his mother is immunocompromosed and at high risk of getting the damn virus? That's why she isn't driving him to the park to play on the swings. That's why she isn't driving him to Subway. If he's supposedly suicidal now because he can't do such monotonous things, imagine how much more devastated he would be if he lost one of his parents.

My state's health department is projecting peak hospital resource use on April 30th. So for us, getting right back to business the very next day is not exactly the smartest move.

It's because it's overwhelming the health care system. The mortality rate and hospitilzation rate percentage is just a bit higher than illnesses like the flu by 2-3 percentage points but when you have billions of people this small percent is enough to push the system over the edge.

Once we're through the first wave we absolutely as a society need to start a phased and careful and slow reopening to get back to normal, not just sitting in our homes for 18 months and waiting until sickness is gone from the Earth.

The places with high infection rates should keep it closed.

There are around 19 states with a death toll less than 100, and about 13 states that are less than 200.

These states should be fine with reopening with the phased approach.

Imagine having a parent that could literally die from exposure to the virus but demanding she drive you everywhere and getting upset when she doesn't

Imagine "feeling suicidal" because you can't get a hug from your "girlfriend". There are people who go months-- years without getting one. They're not threatening to kill themselves over it.

People are dying, people are losing friends and loved ones to this pandemic, and people have lost their jobs. Duncan's dealbreaker? Not being able to go to the fucking mall.

Have you even considered that there is another issue aside from COVID deaths? Namely the deaths that result from a closed economy?

Depression, murder, suicide, violent crimes all rise during economic downturns as people's lives are ruined and their future destroyed. Alcohol and substance abuse skyrockets.

Not to mention the effects on food production, general maintenance of utilities (spare parts being in short supply due to massive supply chain disruptions), and elective medical procedures (my Mom had heart valve replacement surgery delayed and she really needs it done).

Stuff needs to start opening soon or the long term affects will really manifest and dwarf what we currently are dealing with.

None of what you said contradicts anything I've said. What you're proposing also doesn't solve the problem. Stuff reopens and then what? People start dying by the thousands, and more people commit suicide, depression rates get even higher, and these same businesses suffer as a result of the lingering health risk. It's a problem that's going to exist no matter what because the current circumstances, and this is the best way of dealing with it.

I don't beieve anyone has said go back to what we were doing in January. Self-quarentine high-risk people. Keep social distancing around. Probably lower occupancy levels for public places for a while.

But let buisnesses open back up so their workers and owners can earn money to live again. Also don't forget taxes have dried up completely for all levels of government. The ability to pay for social programs has been very severly impacted.

I'd say we should probably shoot to open maybe end of September or so, that seems more realistic.

This, as a starting point. But we should be prepared to stay shut down longer if COVID continues to stick around or gets worse.
