This contest has been really great so far, and we seem to be having them a lot more frequently than the mid-2010s period, so what better time to think about the next one? The first series contest was pretty good, with some very memorable moments, and it was the first contest to show Pokemon coming back in style and Zelda cementing itself over Final Fantasy as the site's favourite. but one of the more predictable contests, I believe we saw our first perfect brackets there (and I would have been one of them if not for Kingdom Hearts' ASV). It was probably a little bit too soon all things considered, there weren't really 32 series worth talking about and the presence of series with only two games at the time shows that.

Since then things have changed immeasurably. There are many notable series like Mass Effect that didn't exist in 2006, and series like Fallout which went from not cared about at all to one of the strongest on the site. There have even been brand new major Nintendo franchises. The series that were present have changed significantly as well. Final Fantasy has fallen, Sonic has gotten even worse, Metroid has gone from being to tier Nintendo to one of their lesser franchises. So a lot has changed, and the potential for excitement is much higher than it was in 2006.

Those are the three main group options. Seeing as how we just had a decade contest, I reckon we wont have another overall game contest next, which is a shame because the last one was ruined. Perhaps series can be next but there havent been too many new series since the last one. I think. And we had a character battle a few years ago. So IDK WHAT TO THINK!

We'll probably have a smaller contest next year, so why not series? Even if Nintendo dominates everything.

Historically, people seem to hate the "tag-team contests" since it concentrates power at the top and we get a bunch of fodder to fill up the rest of the roster. Series is games of a series teaming up. Rivalry is two characters from a franchise teaming up. Years is games from the same year teaming up.

That said, it could work I guess, since it's probably too early for CBXI. Although you'd need to remove Zelda from the bracket since it can presumably 60-40 any other franchise on this site.

Zelda gets to have Ocarina, BotW, ALttP, Majora, and the rest of its OP games considered as a single entrant? Yah keep that.

Unless we divided them into 2D and 3D Zelda for the sake of the balance. That might make things a little more interesting.

Would that really be better though? 3D Zelda will still win the contest, but you now have 2D Zelda potentially making a deep run as well.

Just remove Zelda entirely and put it as bonus boss at the end or something.

I would take Smash > FF long before I would take FF > Mario. The last 15 years have been terrible for FF.

KH beating Castlevania is one of the only results Ive ever felt crushed by. I saw Castlevania winning (by a pretty reasonable margin IIRC) and went away until the next day. Then I checked the result and was floored.

I wonder if Castlevania could Netflix boost its way over the top.

The only way Castlevania wins is if KH3 really poisoned the well beyond repair. SotN is still the only Castlevania game worth anything here.

Castlevania probably wins now. KH should be weaker now than it was then. That was right after KH2. Since then it has just been a lot of middling spin-offs and KH3.

Funny you say Metroid's stock has fallen considering it should do better in a new contest. Metroid games seem to have fared better in more recent games contests. Could be low votals and Super/Prime building up one heck of a reputation whereas in the late '00s the series just kind of existed.

Castlevania got abandoned by Konami more than half a decade ago, and its last good game (Order of Ecclesia) is 12 years old already.

The Netflix show is very good for Alucard but I can't imagine it helped the series or any of its games much. Imagine casuals hearing the show was based on Castlevania 3, going to play that game and dying in the first ten seconds.

I think it's pretty obvious why a show would help a character and not a series.

And yes, Castlevania will do fine because it's respected but it'll lose to a series we actually like. It's just a question of whether we still like KH or not more than anything to do with Castlevania.

Not KH2 specifically, the whole series I meant. 2006-2009 might have been KH's best time in terms of popularity on this site. Then people realized it was going to be forever until they got a new mainline instalment and that the "spin-offs" were mandatory to understand the series' overarching plot and KH stuff has not performed quite up to snuff since.

Idk I've always felt like most of the current bracket gets ganked by the PS2 era. The top 32 of GotD1 would for sure obliterate most of this one's top 32.

Well, let me give you a perspective of someone who liked the show but has played maybe a couple hours of any game. I'd vote for Alucard based on the show because you can like characters for any number of reasons unrelated to games. I couldn't fathom voting for a series of games that I've barely played because of the show though. It's not the same thing.

Oh, and it's different from the Witcher show for a few reasons. The Witcher show was much more popular, for one. It led to a big spike in game sales because Witcher is still a relevant series. You can't rejuvenate a dead series because of a good show. You can only do that with new games that are good.

The main problem is that Castlevania just isn't accessible for newbies. Witcher 3 you can kinda cruise through on easy difficulty if you're a casual. The game the Castlevania show is based on is ancient and fucking hard.

That is a very fair point Leon, though it is worth considering that we've never really seen what a good adaptation could do to a game or series... Because there haven't been any until recently!

I will say for newcomers to the games though, the series doesn't just use Castlevania III, it also uses Symphony of the Night which is a good jumping on point (and Curse of Darkness I guess).

yeah, netflix adaptation has been 3 and Curse of Darkness primarily since it's Trevor, with a few SOTN callbacks for Alucard but it's not his story yet. nobody knows how they're handling Simon and Richter either (or if Juste will exist) but you can probably cram both for next season and hype the shit out of the one after with Alucard for SOTN done right.
