We are nowhere close to being done with COVID-19, no. But the issue is we are going to be dealing with it for the next year or two, minimum, and so at some point we're going to have to open everything back up, because the rest of the world can't handle being put on hold that long. Closing everything is just to "flatten the curve" so we don't need to shut everything down twice.

That said, discussing re-opening things now is easily among the stupidest thing Trump has done lately.

Americans truly worship money, & are more than willing to make blood sacrifices for it.

The most reasonable thing would be to suspend all debts, declare it a criminal offense to even try to violate this, & implement some at minimum temporary UBI to carry people until things are stable, but certain parts of our government (mostly the Republican parts) would never allow this to happen.

Its a damned if you do, damned if you dont situation, and they are already weighing the pros and cons of reopening the economy. On the one hand, you have a highly contagious disease running rampant and risk another flare up of cases, but on the other you run the risk of tanking the economy over a disease that isnt that lethal and with no end in sight. You lose either way.

Because it really isn't possible to keep things shut down for long periods of time, and there are a lot of states where this is actually possible to do while still limiting risks. Don't get me wrong, it's a high wire act and I don't have faith in Trump but if the experts he has at his disposal guide him through this, it might be ok. It sounds like they know that they need large scale testing, and thats a huge plus. Look at South Korea, they have given out the blue print. Test and contact trace and you can open things up and be safe. Maybe not NYC, but most of the country can be safe if they follow that example. If you have Fauci backing these plans, you can't just turn your back on him because you are scared. These are scary times, but if he backs it then I trust him..

TBH, I think this SHOULD be the situation. The biggest issue to it is what people individually like to eat or have special needs like diabetics, which is why I'd suggest sticking with "Food stipends". We could just have some method of people being able to specify what they want such a online, but then you have to deal with people who don't have internet access or aren't good with computers.
