i mean, it's one thing to criticise billionaires for the hoarding of wealth and propagation of inequality but a different thing entirely to start pushing conspiracy theories using decontextualised snippets and random bullshit

I mean people on all sides have gone after gates before. A lot are probably, almost for sure, wild conspiracy claims, but there could be something that is legitimate there.

Bill Gates is trash, but for Trumpeters, it's probably some crazy COVID conspiracy theory ("he created the virus so he can implant trackers in us all with ID2020!"). They think he's Bob Page from Deus Ex (Bezos looks more the part lol).

Gates has spent years warning everyone that a pandemic was happening and telling people really good ideas and prepreation that we needed to do to be ready for it.

It's hard for conservatives to defend the Trump Administration and push "No one could have predicted this" when this is reality.

So they alter reality to a new one where Bill Gates caused the problem rather than warning us about it

That's another plank of the conspiracy theory. He predicted the virus, therefore he must have had a hand in it (even though viruses and in particular Coronaviruses have been known as one of the biggest threats for a while).

There is an old patent for coronavirus that they love to connect to Bill Gates, but a quick look at it reveals that it is a patent for a birdflu vaccine (both the birdflu and COVID-19 belongs to the Coronavirus family) and Bill Gates was not involved.
But who cares about facts?
