I just felt the ending went against everything that made the rest of the film work. Yeah, there's the cliche comment about how "the real horror" is the malleability of our established ethics, principles and sense of rationality in moments of crisis, but also there's like, the crisis itself of a Lovecraftian nightmare dimension bleeding into ours and affecting the world in a manner completely beyond our comprehension with the thick mist entirely obscuring our field of vision. The main overarching horror of the film - especially once the characters leave the grocery store - is that the horrors we've seen are a mere microcosm of the situation, with new discoveries like the pharmacy creatures and the behemoth at the end exacerbating our anxieties about the gravity of the situation, and ultimately Frank Darabont's "twist" sacrificed that sense of uncertainty and wonder all for some (insanely far-fetched) tragic irony.

I disagree that it works against that. I'd argue that that very premise of them only seeing the very beginning of the horrors, that their anixeties of the unknown have become so large and overwhleming, it makes that decision all the more rational. Not to mention we have no guarantee that the world is just completely better after that moment; the military has just cleaned up that initial area. They very well could have only been safe for a little bit. But it's that toying with what happens when you've lost all hope, act on that loss of hope, just to have that glimmer of hope return after it's too late that makes the ending so powerful IMO.

There's definitely still the uncertainty of how the rest of the world has been affected & everything, but given the fact that the majority of the movie took place near ground zero of the whole fiasco - and the fact that the mist was dissipating in the direction the characters were traveling, with miles of clear skies opening up behind the moving tanks - it can be inferred that the problem was at least placated at the source, which dampens that element considerably. Also the score for the ending scene felt really tacky in a horror setting, at least to me... it's whatever though.

Anyways, time to fire off some of the originals:
L'Inferno (1911)
J'accuse! (1919)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Hxan (1922)
Nosferatu (1922)

And, for good measure, Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)

I just saw Bone Tomahawk last night and I absolutely loved it. I'd reccomend giving it a watch tbh.

Also saw The Innkeepers. It was... ok.

So I know Bone Tomahawk is supposed to be a good film - but it just didn't hold my interest when I watched it, so I only half paid attention. Normally I can pay attention to something slower if there's something, like visuals or small details, to keep me engaged -- like I had/have no problem paying attention to say, The vvitch or the first half of Audition. I don't know exactly why it didn't capture me at all? I can try watching it again sometime for sure.

I don't remember watching The Innkeepers at all. I just know I literally put it on twice with my ex, and both times she told me we already watched it. We got about ten minutes in and it seemed vaguely familiar but she had me turn it off -- but I honestly don't remember ever watching it in its entirety. I know that sounds really weird, and it is.

The first half of Bone TOmahawk I'd say is more focused on the Western side then the horror side, so if you're expecting more horror stuff, I can see how it'd be hard to keep interested.

But overall I think it blends the 2 genres very well, and it also has one of the most gruesome horror movie deaths I've seen in recent memory.
