Besides the obvious, it's because of how strongly people are vilifying Kobe because of the rape case. And while it may be extremely shitty, his apology and efforts to become a better person didn't count for anything to many people. So when Austin dies you can bet there's going to be a lot of people vilifying him for his domestic violence incident, completely ignoring his efforts to apologize and redeem himself.

People still bring up Austin's domestic violence thing even though he's often talked about what a piece of shit he was during that time and how he was in a real bad place mentally. Haven't heard anything else of the sort since and he's changed his life around but nowadays you don't get redemption, you make a mistake you are trash for the rest of your life and it's a sad state of affairs.

I forgive Stone Cold just because the violence happened during his shitty midlife crisis / addiction phase in the early 2000s and he seems like a decent guy otherwise. He's been married to his current wife for 10 years who to the best of my knowledge has never accused him of abuse, if she spoke up and said something it'd be a different story but until then yeah, seems like he's moved past it

In the same way that a lot of sports athletes have done a lot of bad things, the people in the wrestling industry are not exactly saints themselves, unless your name is Nora Greenwald.

People may talk about Stone Cold beating up Debra, but alongside it will be Hogan is a racist, Shawn Michaels was a real life weasel and drug addict, Bradshaw was a bully, and Seth Rollins dated a neo-nazi and was a douchebag on social media.

The truly sad thing is that none of us are saints yet people will vilify these people just because they are celebrities of sorts in the public eye. Judging others and slandering them may allow you to feel better because you didn't touch someone without their consent, but that doesn't make you a good person. If you want to be good, go out and be a good by actually trying to change the world around you. Help the poor or save a cat, don't talk shit on Twitter.

John Cena cheated on his wife but that went under the radar, surprisingly

Sports and wrestling legends cheating on their wives doesn't count as a controversy at this point IMO, especially if they did it while in the business.

Like that's just a given at this point.

Rape and beating someone up are pretty big things. And some times people aren't going to forgive you, no matter what, and nor should they have to.

It's the price to pay when you show yourself to be garbage, and something you have to accept some people will think of you. If you're truly sorry and repentant, you will keep on being a better person and not get pissy that people still fairly hold you in poor regard.

Steve Austin's domestic violence is basically roid rage brought on by the steroids WWE made him take and then they covered it up.

This isn't really an excuse per se but there's a big difference in that one is corporate sponsored drug fueled misbehavior of someone not in his right mind and the other is someone voluntarily setting up a clandestine meeting with the explicit purpose of cheating on his wife and then ass raping the girl because she said she didn't want to do anal all on your own choices.

To equate what the two of them did is pretty fucking tone deaf and lacking in tons of context.

Nobody was equating what both of them did. I'm simply giving an example. And given that people still bring up what Austin did it's not far fetched to suggest that they're going to use it to piss on his grave too

I mean someone will find some reason to piss on anyone's grave. Even Fox & Friends somehow found it in them to piss on Fred Rogers.

Pretty much.

Hell any famous wrestler who dies will probably be criticized for promoting an industry who treats its talent pretty horribly. Hell how are wrestling fans gonna be when Vince dies.

You know how you stop that from being a reality? You stop giving attention to people for saying it.

Congrats you fixed journalism by just enjoying what you like instead of needing it to make you feel like you're better than those dastardly journalism.

Search Kobe on this board, you'll see why journalism will continue to be negative and low brow. Because it's what people to respond to.
Does anyone want to talk about plaschke's emotional piece in the la times?

https://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/story/2020-01-26/bill-plaschke-column-on-kobe-bryant

Or the countless other pieces of great journalism from people who got to know Kobe on a professional and personal level?

Hell about remember some great pieces kobe himself helped author like his dear basketball piece on the players Tribune
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/dear-basketball

Or the great piece romana shelburne did following his retirement

http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/15232286/former-lakers-star-kobe-bryant-left-nba-just-getting-started

You get what you ask for. Make a better choice.
