I guess I would do it if I was working for a small business and the boss also would put in the work and not earn a lot more than me.

Ive mostly worked for big companies, so Ive made sure I got compensated well if I needed to work extra.

Yeah, they do. All that extra time went to paying FICA taxes and income taxes. I'd work 16 hours over to pay an extra $100 - $200. I was $15/hr at the time and at 56 hours I'd take home a little over $560 or so... which was an average of $10 an hour, after taxes. If I worked 40 hours my checks were $480.

They weren't, because that's not how taxes work. There is no special tax on overtime. It's taxed exactly like the rest of your hourly wages.

Most payroll systems treat your weekly check as though it will be the same for the entire year. So if you worked extra hours and it caused it to look like you might have bumped up to the next tax bracket you might have more withheld, but you'd just get it back on your return since that's how taxes actually work.

Lmao! The guy above you just said what I was saying. Read his post. You're pushed up to a higher bracket for that overtime, so they tax you more because of that. After all the math, it actually lowers your hourly rate. Yeah, it's extra money, but it's not worth that extra effort. Like I said, at $15 an hour, working 56 hours -- 16 hours overtime --, I never saw $800. Why bust my ass for a company -- using my valuable personal time for them -- for a measly extra $100 - $150? It's not worth it, and that's why salary and commission are far better than hourly. You get your shit done, at your pace, and go home.

I don't pay my guys hourly, and I never will... and they will never ask me to, either. Want to know why? Because I don't care if they are working 10 hours less one week than another. In fact, they are more efficient and more productive since they know I don't make them work extra/overtime to earn their money. And on those holiday weeks I pay them $200 extra for the extra work involved, anyway.

Well, since folks want to go with math...

$15/hr at 40hrs a week works out to 600 2400/month
2400 x 12 = 28,800/yr which puts you into the 12% tax bracket no matter how you file.
So 28,800 x 0.88 = 25,344. Then do the rest of the math backwards.
25,344 / 12 = 2112 per month. 2112 / 4 = 528 per week.

Now let's assume you get the same rate but with 16 hours overtime per week, using the above example. The only part that needs to be redone for the calculations are those extra hours at 1.5x rate, or 22.50/hr

22.50 x 16 = 360 x 4 = 1440 x 12 = 17,280

28,800 + 17,280 = 46,080
That would then put you into the 22% tax backet ONLY if you're filing as Single or Married Filing Separately. That bracket kicks in after annual incomes of $39,476.

So let's assume that the 17,280 is taxed at 22%. So you'd take 17,280 x 0.78 and get approximately $13,478 and then run the math backwards again.

13,478 / 12 = 1,123 per month, 1,123 / 4 = 280.75 per week.

So add in your original 528 to the 280.75 and you get 808.75 for your check.

Actual numbers are highly likely to vary by state, and the actual amount they tax at the higher bracket. But that's why you don't get as much as you think you would when working that much overtime. So while taxes are overall calculated on a yearly basis for individuals, for companies they're calculated quarterly. So when you go to file your taxes in the new year you'll bring in your W2 and whatever other documentation you'll need, and they'll see how much tax you paid overall. And if it's higher than your actual yearly income would dictate, you get the refund for the difference. So in your case if you actually made "not enough" money to be in the 22% tax bracket but were taxed at that rate on some paychecks, you'll get the difference back.

I pray one day you're offered a raise and turn it down because you don't understand how taxes work.

You only pay 22% on the 6k over 39k when the 22% goes into effect. And even then a standard deduction will cover you.

Learn how taxes work, it's not complicated. Jesus.

I've had the discussion with my boss where I explain that I work and he pays me for that time. At the end of the pay period we're square. I've also set up terms where if he asks me to do something beyond the scope of my normal job then I require additional compensation. I essentially explained it to him as if I was a mercenary.

I dont have to worry about mine going up until I'm making about $80k a year, so won't have to worry about that. And yes I understand that you'd only be taxed at the higher rate for the amount that exceeds the lower tax bracket, but for the employer they have to tax that paycheck as though ALL of their paychecks would be at that rate.

It's less about the specific math and more about answering the question at hand. The answer is that they're put into a higher tax bracket for that paycheck, and thats why they don't see the amount of increase in the check they're expecting to.

Learn how payroll and corporate taxes work. They're a lot more complicated.
