Perhaps youll unearth a can of Crisco for the holiday baking season. If so, youll be one of millions of Americans who have, for generations, used it to make cookies, cakes, pie crusts and more.

But for all Criscos popularity, what exactly is that thick, white substance in the can?

If youre not sure, youre not alone.

For decades, Crisco had only one ingredient, cottonseed oil. But most consumers never knew that. That ignorance was no accident.

A century ago, Criscos marketers pioneered revolutionary advertising techniques that encouraged consumers not to worry about ingredients and instead to put their trust in reliable brands. It was a successful strategy that other companies would eventually copy.

Amazing how it was effectively industrial waste turned into a food product. It is nice though how in the last decade people have become a lot more conscious of what they're eating.

Similar to how when I was younger, it was "Butter isn't good for you, use margarine." Now it's "Margarine isn't good for you, use butter." ^_^

rofl, who the fuck cares about lard getting "toppled"? Is there a shred of evidence that shows crisco has demonstrated significantly more negative health impacts compared to lard? since as far as i know, the evidence would point to the exact contrary. maybe the bigger concern should be cutting our intake of saturated fats, rather than if our saturated fats come from an oil with a pretty name? this is such a dumb fucking take. marketing and the ubiquity of processed foods as created problems for the american diet, but the fact that lard isn't as popular as it was 100 years ago isn't one of them. this is the kind pearl clutching you see from facebook mom memes hemming and hawing about how you shouldn't eat anything with ingredients you can't pronounce, or how you should shoot chamomile up your ass because it's more "natural" than eating evil GMO produce

It turns out butter, margarine, coagulated oil, and lard are all really bad for you and arguing over which one is better is like doing the Twinkie exercise.

false. margarine is significantly worse for you than butter, because margarine contains trans fats.

No margarine made today has trans fats.
