got to chapter 3 of 64 and Im not really seeing the appeal. I think Mario and Luigi has a much stronger first game, is ttyd a huge improvement or nah?

TYD is a big improvement in pretty much every way. All the charm is preserved, it's a bigger game, it has better visuals (though the first one looks really good, imo), and a more substantial story line.

That said, it's pretty clearly a sequel to the same game. There isn't a huge deal of difference in the gameplay, just more of it. I think the locations are better realized, though.

Paper Mario is good. Thousand year is much better. The writing is really good and the game feels better to play with a Gamecube controller as opposed to an N64 controller.

combats why im not really feeling it to be honest. I feel like Mario and Luigi is much better in that regard.

TTYD has the superior combat system and writing if that's what you feel is missing from 64

There are a couple of chapters in TTYD that are so bad they're stopping me from replaying the game.

Mario and Luigi does have better combat.

Paper Mario:TTYD has better writing and story IMO.

I like them all. I'm not sure if I prefer the first Mario and Luigi or the first two Paper Mario games though. I know I prefer the Papers over the Mario and Luigi sequels though.

Mario and Lugi feels a bit more like an RPG. But I love the partners in the Paper games, and the badges are more interesting. I do like how connected the Mario and Luigi world is, feels like a fleshed out map kinda. Versus TTYD doesnt actually have an interconnected world you can just walk through. All the different areas you have to use a pipe or other transportation methods to get to where the chapter takes place.

TTYD is definitely wittier in the English version with the humor and stuff.

Bump Attack shows up way too late in TYD.

You get First Attack pretty easily though and it's only slightly worse.

I don't think it's that often that you're going back to earlier stages anyway.

Partners also have a lot more relevance in TTYD, not just because they have their own HP & whatnot, but their individual dialogue means they get more characterization than just their initial chapter.

I honestly have them about equal. TYD probably is technically the better game but 64 has the nostalgia for me.

I played ttyd first but I actually think 64 has a sort of particular rustic, Mario charm that ttyd doesn't really do as well

This too. TTYD has better writing and combat. But the feels of the original are great. It's just nice to get to walk around the mushroom kingdom in a way that feels like you are really exploring the area. Plus Toad Town is awesome.
