Eventually an opening came up and I felt I had enough experience and knowledge to apply for it. Thankfully, they agreed!

-Work fucking hard.
-Give FAR more of a shit than your co-workers.
-Actually care about stuff in the store.
-Care about stuff that has nothing to do with your job.
-Care about when a piece of paper is on the floor or there's a small bit of a water and clean it up.
-Always offer to help when you see a co-worker struggling.
-Try to work in every section so you can learn a lot of each job.
-If possible try to see the day-end processes like handling money.
-Make sure you're trustworthy with stuff and can be counted on.
-Show forms of leadership like giving advice or showing people how stuff works or handling the break of a manager.
-If you struggle with something, be HONEST and go to your boss and say "I'm struggling with this, can you help?" If the manager is decent at all, he'll appreciate your honesty and respect it. Managers hate when they have workers who can't admit they don't know something so they just do it wrong...a mature worker admits when they struggle.
-When someone asks for help, don't blow them off. Even if you can't help, make sure you find someone who can.
-Smile all the time, even if you're not feeling it. Folks always want to be around someone smiling.
-If dealing with customers, always go out of your way to help them. They'll notice.
-Don't ever be late...in fact, try to show up early...even if it's five minutes, it'll be noticed.
-Same with leaving. You don't have to leave late...just almost always be one of the last ones to do so.
-Stay late every once in a while to show you care to finish something.
-Don't no-show for work and try not to call in too often...and, if you do, have a reasonable excuse that isn't easily disproven. Less detail, the better.
-Don't ever brag about partying exploits or anything like that...let folks think your life is boring. If you must suggest it, make it seem like you used to party but that you don't do it much these days.

Hell no. The only reason I took it at all was because they offered me an obscene amount of money.

Basically this. Ill also add to make sure youre not being a micromanager, but giving people legitimate advice and finding ways to help them out. A good manager trusts his team and encourages them.
