You know they are the same thing right? Literally the only difference between a religion and a cult is membership numbers. Some people will act all offended now, but do you know what the Romans called the early Christians? The Cult of Christ. They were referred to as a cult. It's not until they got more numbers that they were then considered a religion.
This is how every religion starts out. At first it is a few people so they are looked down upon by society as a whole for being weird and believing in something different. Eventually you gain enough followers where it becomes a movement which then leads to enough followers to be established as a legitimate religion. Or you don't get enough followers and are known as a cult for all time.
