Well, being 14 he's likely to head straight to a max strength juvenile detention center until he's 18.

I work in a state mental hospital so let me dispel the idea that people who plead insanity get to go somewhere nicer than prison. We don't really get too excited trying to see to the creature comforts of our killers and rapists. Honestly I think I'd rather go to jail and take my chances there.

Prisoners probably have more freedom than these guys do. Some are never even allowed out of their cell except for bathroom breaks depending on their condition. Just a small empty room with a plastic bed and a small dresser for personal things (usually drawings and stuff) if they behave There are different areas though like the people who arent murderers and rapists have way more freedom and get to live in a way nicer building that isnt fenced in with razor wire. There are some really sweet old ladies in some or those wards that I make a point to go talk to when I see them and it's like having a dozen extra grandmas. probably the violence is worse in prison. I remember that jeffrey dahmer, back then really wanted to be sentenced to a mental institution. I think the primary reason was violence, of course he wasn't and look what happened to him
