UPDATE: The system doesn't work. I think it's a cable issue, since it only came with an RF adapter which produces clicking noises plus static on poweroff on channel 3, but nothing at all on channel 4. I'll source an AV cable from my local store or eBay/Amazon, whatever is cheaper, and go from there.

I've fixed old consoles before, I've repaired both my original PSX and original PS2, plus modded a first gen Xbox 360 to play burned games. This might actually be just as fun as the console itself

A lot of old consoles, especially Geneses, can be really janky and not in perfect working condition from my experience.

If you have experience with it, I'd mod the console to have RCA. Its just more convenient these days than RF. I have the OG model 1 Genesis, still runs but you can see a major difference in quality on RF due to modern TVs....If i had the know how i would mod it to RCA and plug it into my HDMI converter. But these days any modern system can get Genesis games so i haven't had the urgency to do it.

The lack of AV on the genesis is a bummer. I hooked mine up to my 55" 4k tv via the coax and the image was all wavy.
I bought an analogue mega sg though and it looks great - its just a lot to drop on a genesis console is all...

There should be a standard AV cable for the Genesis 2, which I have

I used to have a Mark I, until it died and I couldn't figure out why - no obviously leaky caps, no obvious bad solder joints, etc. I was moving at the time and didn't have the space to store it so into the landfill it went. I agree with you though, the Mark I was way cooler, but there was one downside: the outputs on the back only provided mono sound (unless you used the headphone jack in the front), while the later generations offered stereo support all around

I'm sure I could have restored it if I'd had more equipment like an oscilloscope/digital logic reader, but I didn't, and I also didn't have the time.
