you're supposed to top off the evening after food and whatever with gift opening and then the family members(or friends) can go home at the end of the night.

even if people are staying over why keep them waiting and excited for the next day which will just make them unable to fall asleep(kids mostly)?

The only reason we still do a gift exchange is for my sister, and she's adamant about doing it Christmas morning.
