Okay maybe hate is too strong of a word but I don't like it at all. It's too airy, too bouncy, and just plain doesn't fit. Especially the overworld music.

Fucking same, just started it the other day and it's been fun to play so far but my god is the OST shit.

I guess it doesn't help that I just finished Nier: Automata which had a fucking stellar soundtrack.

are you playing the switch version? there's a setting that lets you play the actually good DQVIII overworld theme

yes, the overworld theme in the original game was so bad and hated that in the definitive version they give you an option to not have to listen to it

yeah music isn't the games strong suit. real shame considering dq viii's ost was absolutely amazing.

if you're playing on pc you can download a mod that replaces the midi tracks with the orchestrated ones or with just whatever you want.

That may be it, honestly. I just finished my second run through of Three Houses and I've been spoiled by how great the music is in that.

The carnival music made me quit playing after I beat some pretty boy knight right before I got the ship.

Is it just me, or do ALL the towns and cities have the exact same music? Cobblestone, Heliodor, Hotto, Gallopolis. I haven't heard any variation.

Hotto has different music. Half of the towns have their own themes

I will also say that its genuinely disappointing when you learn that all of the good tracks in the game are just redone tracks from older DQ games. If youre not playing the Switch version with its orchestral arrangements its even worse.

Tbh this is entirely the fault of the composer. Though I dont see SE parting with him until he passes; hes been with them since the first game iirc

Hopefully soon, since the guy is like 90s. Mainly because of his other controversial issues (being a revisionist nationalist who I believe actually has the power to influence politics).

I think the problem is Sugiyama has been writing the same kind of music for Dragon Quest for 30 years now, so he's running into a situation where he's expected to write stuff that "sounds"like Dragon Quest, but also needs to actually write new pieces.

As a result, he's kinda just writing songs that are fine on their own but don't really sound like they fit in the game anymore . They just sound like, well, orchestra music.

Thank goodness it wasnt just me that noticed. Almost all the towns have the same music as well. Its overall just an average JRPG, but i like it because of nostalgia reasons. Slyvando is my current favorite character and i doubt the other 2 that eventually join your team will be able to outmatch him either.

Isn't the composer forcing Square to use shitty MIDIs outside of Japan?

I think the music was like that in the original Japanese release as well.

Same with the Smash DLC, where the game itself only got the MIDI versions of those songs, despite the character trailer using the orchestral versions.

You're correct with the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII, though; the Japanese version had the orchestral soundtrack, while the international versions had MIDI.

if i'm being honest it's probably my most disappointing game of the year

it's still fun, but i have a lot of issues with it. doesn't come close to matching the greatness of V, VIII and even IX in my opinion

I don't really feel the disappointment that most older fans feel. I got VIII literally because of Smash. Figured if they were as excited for Banjo as we were, I should give this series a shot, see why it's been going on for so long. I did end up loving VIII though but I do feel like this game doesn't have a good hook.

is he the racist one?

edit Yep, it's the nationalist, racist and homophobic one. Resetera was having a field day with this guy months back.
