They suddenly have easy access to information and have no experience discerning what is true, while also seeing that the world isn't what they thought it is-- that most people aren't like them and most places aren't like where they live. Middle America's been living in a fantasyland for decades, at least. I imagine reality is a big wet bite of existential horror.
