I've been arguing this with a friend of mine for years, but he claims that nobody, not a soul, knew who Killer Mike was before Run The Jewels and that he was never a mainstream artist.

I firmly disagree with this. Especially if you lived in Atlanta. I've known about KM since I was a kid.
He associated heavily with OutKast and the Dungeon Family, even having the best verses in the former's track "Whole World," which went on to win a Grammy.

All these points I'm bringing up and his only retort is "Doesn't matter".
I'm not saying he was Tupac or anything, but he definitely had some kind of mainstream presence at one point or another in his career before RTJ. We ask other people we know and most of them say they do know about him pre-RTJ and my friend just hand waves them away lol.
