For all the menial jobs out there that require a bachelors degree, all we require of the people we entrust the safekeeping of society to is a high school degree

i feel like if police were required to go through the experience of college, it would give them more perspective and reduce the brotherhood and number of power-hungry, shitty cops out there

I feel like forcing them to go to university might actually exacerbate the problem -- some would definitely get involved in fraternities (even more "brotherhood" stuff). it would also make their required classes significantly less enjoyable for the people who wanted to be there.

I know my sister took a Soc class about policing. because of the way it was set up, a lot of the people in the class wanted to go to the police academy (I don't know the specifics, but it was some sort of requirement). they really ruined the class for her

No, and you should laugh at anyone that actually believes this.

Putting yourself into ridiculous debt chasing after a piece of paper with no return value is not a requirement to beat up minorities over loose cigarettes because you fear for your life or stay away from ANTIFA thugs beating up old people because you fear for your life.
You dont have to put yourself into ridiculous debt to get a degree

Taking some college classes is not going to curb the bonds that are going to form in lines of work like law enforcement or the military.

I do recall an article posted here years back talking about how people who score high on IQ tests tend to get bored too easily on the job so they do discriminate their applicants on that basis.

I know that a degree is required in certain fields of police work.

The avg patrol or beat cop doesn't need to know forensics or detective work.

Even then some will still be asses regardless of their education.

It's not an argument, because you have no actual stance. The SC ruled they could do it, but that doesn't mean that it's wise, or that police departments do it. That one department did it at that time, that's literally all it says.

This.

It might be a partial requirement in my state though. The local police departments have recruited at the colleges here, and when I was taking Criminal Justice myself, my professors strongly encouraged further schooling if we wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. My favorite professor said too many people misunderstand what it means to be a police officer and that's why she tries to focus on the logistical side of policing, i.e. laws, regulations (local and state), and paperwork. She loved that last one too, always telling us how incoming police officers underestimate the amount of paperwork there is in the job.

Yup. Here in Portland, OR they heavily urge you to have education, and actually prefer it in an unrelated field. Not just because it shows dedication, but having established outside interests is very important in their eyes regarding reducing stress on the job.

It's not standard across the board, but the fact is one department did discriminate along that lines, which was the article we all recalled that you denied ever existing. It is not us that has no stance, it's just you.

when the reality is there's evidence of only one department doing this, so making a claim that police in general do it is misleading at best and lying at worst. ESPECIALLY considering that article is nearly 20 years old, the Supreme Court advised against the practice in their ruling, and despite every ignorant anti-cop poster on the internet citing that same ruling, I've yet to see a single one present another case of that happening, even in the same department.
