Michael Jackson would probably run away with this, but he sorta went and ruined that.

I honestly struggle to think of anyone else that can compare though.. The Beatles have such a specific sound. Same goes for almost any other band. Elvis is too old..

Queen really got woven into sports culture which opens them up quite a bit.. But still not enough to nearly touch Jackson. Prince is Michael Jackson lite..

Modern artists? Um.. I never hear people talk bad on Adele? Bruno Mars sorta had a thing going for a bit...

What do y'all think?

Both changed their sounds quite a bit over the years, and even crossed genres.

Gonna toss Billy Joel into the mix also.

Neither touches MJ.

Swift is the least soulful creature to ever exist. And Beyonce turns old people off too much.

I honestly think MJ stood at a junction where he benefitted from old school levels of popularity but new school levels of marketability(which he utterly ruined). His music crosses racial barriers en masse which is huge, and probably the biggest thing most artists fail to do.

Current market is oversaturated and often over specialized.

I love this answer. He's my personal favorite.. I just can't put him over MJ because of the way people reacted to shit like Thriller and the moonwalk. MJ almost had this Bruce Lee like legend to him.

Ain't no one losing their minds over Ribbon in the Sky.. Lol. But still Stevie has nice appeal range..

I think Queen would get a pass for being "too white" for breaking down barriers for the homosexual community, and STD awareness, especially when he died from one. That in itself opened their music, and is a continued influence in many communities.

The Doors made a couple Blues albums, back in that era, it was definitely not a white genre of music, nor were a lot of venues and clubs they were playing Blues in strictly white audiences.

Billy Joel is white AF in every aspect, so I agree there.

I think Queen's command over sports music did wonders for broadening their appeal. And they'll definitely echo through time because of their contributions to gay rights.

The Doors are great and all, but even if they were as diverse in their fanbase as you're letting on, they never tapped into the cultural zeitgeist as much as MJ.

Because music is largely cultural. And as a world that's begun blending we're capable of seeing artists appeal to those outside their culture. Thus this topic.

Well no, definitely not. I'm not debating that fact at all, i'm just offering a different response. I don't think The Doors were diverse with their fans at all, but they were definitely more diverse than a lot of rock back then that wasn't Jimi Hendrix. I honestly don't even know how much of a diverse appeal Hendrix had to be honest.

I think Madonna would make for a very good case also.

Ah gotcha.

Yeah, Madonna was so heavily engrained into the 80's she was essentially a white female MJ.

Honestly I think Bruno Mars has a much larger pulse than people want to admit. If only for the fact that I hear older people constantly praising him.

He crosses racial barriers, age barriers and sex barriers. Which is apparently a hard thing to do.

As we get older, hip hop artists will become more viable.. But otherwise they're too generationally specific.
