I feel like Hollywood is getting a little better about not making everyone ridiculously gorgeous.

That stems, and rightfully so, from the current diversity push. Women's rights advocates / feminists don't want every woman to look like Barbie or a Playmate. Cultural inclusion means incorporating hairstyles and fashion trends which don't coincide with traditional western standards of beauty. And the more you include, the more you include.

First, we have a white woman who looks average.
Then we have a black woman with a Type A personality haircut and attire.
Then we have a white guy or Latino with a slight gut and a bald spot.

There is still room for attractive people of every gender and ethnic background, but I think we're getting better about not making the computer geek or used car salesperson into someone you want to hop into bed with at first sight.
