This person is not working. Do you think lesser of them?

For whatever reason, this person is not working. You don't know anything else about this person besides that. Do you look down on them because of that, or do you feel like you need to know their situation or cirmcumstances before forming an opinion?

I don't care. I've grown up with it being really common in my area to just be on unemployment benefits for several generations in the family

I think it'd be good for society if people were more understanding like in this topic.

I remember some time ago I was unemployed and struggling, the worst part was the shame... the condescending looks. When I was growing up, the mentality was that a man should always have a job. So I felt like trash because I didn't, got to the point where I didn't want to leave the house or talk to anyone.

Being unemployed in itself, I wouldn't judge the person.

But when I hear people, especially young graduates, being unemployed for two years out of college because they can't get a good job in their chosen field and they refuse to "settle" for unskilled work like a call centre or retail, I look down on that awful attitude. I was brought up that ya gotta work, if you need to swallow your pride in the process them so be it.

I'd need more info. Most everyone will be without a job for at least a day at some point

Absolutely not. I get a lot of hostility from strangers due to not having a job, especially when they find out I'm not looking for one due to being physically and mentally ill. Then they usually try to tear apart and dismiss my disabilities as if it's any of their business. Can almost guarantee someone will try it in this topic

I'm currently unemployed. I quit my job of two years because I was miserable. I had 5 bosses (one actual boss, 4 people that acted like my boss), such high stress but such little pay, too many deadlines, no training, and treated like crap. When I put my two week notice in, no one gave a crap. They didn't try to save me or offer me higher pay, and they even congratulated my replacement (while not wishing me best of luck). To add insult to injury, they cut my direct deposit for the last pay check, and they want me to come in to get my final check.

I do have a job lined up now though.

You know what I call swallowing your pride? Having enough self respect not to get a job that doesn't allow you to improve yourself and make a living. Like a call center and retail. I do want to clarify that I'm not excusing psychology degree baristas.

I guess we were just brought up differently but I've got to disagree. Ya gotta go and do what you need to do to put food on the table. Doesn't stop you still applying for better jobs in the meantime, but to think that some jobs are "beneath" you and that you are somehow entitled to a better job by default... I wouldn't employ that person LOL

I was unemployed for 5 months after graduating college and I was looking down on myself a lot. I felt like a complete failure. But I recently started working at a retail job. I still feel like a failure

this.

but I'd also like to extend this to those life-long underachievers who still believe they're smarter than the average person, and keeps complaining that the tech jobs they want require degrees.

So wait. You don't look down on those who are unemployed, but you do look down on those who accept a position below their abilities?

Some people gotta pay rent and put food on the table, and sometimes that means doing a job you don't always like.

But retail and call centre is fine work if you're aware of what you want to do.
I knew a guy from high school who didn't want to go to college, stayed in his parttime job, started fulltime when he finished high school and 3 years later he was the manager of that one while the owner moved on to another two stores to manage.

Retail is a drag, but you gotta keep a positive attitude even when it gets tough. It is cool to be there temporarily for a minimal skilled position, but dont make a career out of it. The people Ive worked with that have made a career out of it are always so goddamn bitter and refuse to take responsibility for themselves as to why their life is where it is at. Always strive to do better and plan ahead on legitimate ideas on how to create more wealth beyond it.
I actually like the work even though ( or maybe because) its completely mindless. Even dealing with customers doesn't bother me even though I don't know enough about the store yet to answer most of their questions. I just feel frustrated that I can't seem to land an entry level job that's related to my degree. Minimum wage in my city is $15 but this job is one county over so I'm making $12 an hour instead. I definitely don't want to be stuck here but I'm so awkward during interviews that I usually bomb them even though I prepare for them like crazy. I'm still applying for stuff but its starting to feel hopeless

>_>

I worked as a dishwasher for 2 years. Got "promoted" to a different position and they gave me an extra dollar, and then a little but later the min wage was raised to match what I make. Then I took a different dishwashing job and the manager said "I'll give you more money... how does an extra quarter per hour sound?".

At the first job, too, I asked if I could switch to busboy to get tip out, they make a little bit more than the dishwashers and low level cooks. Boss just told me to fuck off. >_>

The closest I ever got to a decent job, I had an interview and was told how impressive the sample work I showed was. Then I emailed to follow up and... nothing.

So for the last two years I've just kind of given up.
