I work...

'Cause the saying is '9-to-5' but I've never encountered any workplace that has this shift. The 9-hour BS is the norm. Is 8 hours an American thing or from a previous generation back when the parents all had it easy?

Also, since this is now in your head:

(Now the bit where everyone tells no one who cares that they're unemployed or work ungodly hours. Ok Dave, thanks for letting us all know.)

The 9-hour day is based on the bullshit idea that it takes an hour to eat lunch.

In practice, "lunch hour" is more like "screw you hour."

I'll be the first to admit I have used it to get stuff done, but it makes a lot more sense in an environment where strict hours aren't necessary for business reasons to just let people eat at their desks and go home after 8 hours if they want.

In reality, that's not realistic either though since all the other bipedal lemmings on Earth are ok with the mandatory screw you hour so if you were to actually do that, you'd be missing business hours. For example, I work 7 to 4 because I want to miss rush hour in the morning and yet if I went home at 3, it would reflect negatively on me.

I just use my lunch hour these days to walk for exercise. Works well enough since I do that anyway. I still get to go do business stuff if I need to.

I just go in at 7 or 8 and work until I'm done, usually only takes 4 or 5 hours.

I'm learning it has to do with the lunch hour. However (in my minute experience) this extra hour is losing its effect now Gen Z-ers are starting to gain supervisory/leadership roles.

They give zero craps and everyone's going home early every night once the boss is gone. If they can't leave, no one's doing any work anyway. I don't think Gen X bosses have any idea how brazen they are. The older gen can be lazy too, but they do that by not putting 100% in, ignoring issues, maybe they'll go home a bit early on the odd day. But Gen Z-ers will literally do nothing and just take the money if they can. But I'm not complaining.

Gen X's catchphrase was "everyone stays behind until this is done."

Gen Z's is "we're leaving an hour early tonight, no point starting anything now so just chill bro".

i work 8:30 to 4:30

i basically stop doing work around 3pm anyway and merely choose to work unless something emergent comes in.

I get 2 15 min breaks and a 1hr lunch, also i'm a union rep so if something comes up i get that time as well. I'd say i work about 4 hours a day, and am just there for appearances the other few hours

6:00am - 4:30pm Mon-Thur

I've been doing that for the past 5 years and I quite like it.

This is my ideal schedule.

I work 9.00 - 17.00/17.30 from Tues. to Sat. with a 30-minute lunch, which I'm pretty satisfied with right now. Best part about my schedule is that I can choose to come in early whenever I want if I feel I can get more work done and I don't get questioned; that's one of the few perks of being the only person who knows how to work my position.

'8 hours' wins by a landslide, but absolutely no one works 9 to 5. Both a huge surprise for me.

I'm a millennial and I'm down with that. I'll leave early quite a few days. I'm salaried so fuck 'em.
