You can't tell someone you are on a break and expect them to just sit around and wait for you to end the break. Rachel was a huge selfish bitch and got what she deserved. Ross was a generally unlikeable character though so fuck him too.

Rachel is fine with not wanting to get back with him after he slept with someone else.

At the end of the day, Ross fucked up more because he did want to be with her and slept with someone else.

he wanted to be with Rachel, and would have been with her if they hadn't been "on break"

from his perspective, there was no reason to believe they'd get back together any time soon.

Ross is technically right. They were on a break. He is, however, still the asshole in the situation. You love this woman so much, you've been pining for her for years, and when she says you need a break in the relationship, you go out and sleep with a woman that same damn night? That makes you an asshole.

Let's also not ignore the entire build-up to the break. Ross was being irrationally, crazily jealous of Mark. IIRC, he even wanted her to turn down a dream job because Mark was the one who set up the interview. And I for sure remember that he massively disrupted her workplace because he was jealous of her. Then when Rachel leans on Mark during the breakup, Ross overhears him there on the phone and just assumes Rachel's "cheating on him" which leads to him banging copy girl.

And if that's not enough to convince you, he goes to great lengths to try and hide that he slept with the girl. So he knows what he did was fucked up.

You cannot NOT be in a relationship with someone and then expect that someone not to be interested in other (potential) partners.
