Want a series similar in style but with far better characters? First law Trilogy.

Want a modern series with a huge dedicated fan base and massive potential for additional material? Mistborn.

Want a new long series to build a bandwagon for(with bonus better reliability in release schedule)? Stormlight Archives.

Want to do an epic fantasy you can reliably adapt under a single movie? Lies of Locke Lamora.

Want a series with enough epic scale to bankrupt your company? Malazan book of the Fallen.

There are many options as good as or better than game of thrones.

All of those are complete except stormlight, which has an author that actually treats it as a job and won't cause issues in that regard.

I only know of two fantasy series getting adaptations right now and both look great(golden compass and wheel of time)

Lies of Locke Lamora is book 1 of a planned 7 (I think) and Scott Lynch is almost GRRM slow

I'm pretty sure companies have been trying to get everything on this list adapted for years. Malazan I'm not sure of, but the Gentleman Bastard series has been optioned forever.

I'd love love love a Gentleman Bastard series though. Each book has been amazing in its own way.

They made a few d&d movies, Eragon, Golden Compass, etc etc. The list is quite extensive.

The TV show that downplayed the fantasy and pretty much kept it out of the show until you were already hooked? Yeah that's a great example!

But no one has ever say octiwrong was smart without heavy sarcasm being used.

There have been back and forth discussions for Sanderson movies but the only one optioned is his YA series Steelheart iirc

Well, there were those Narnia movies, they made at least one Eragon movie and I think planned to adapt the whole series but it bombed, Mists of Avalon and 10th Kingdom got miniseries, a bunch of garbage D&D branded movies, those are the ones that just spring to mind but there were a fair bit more. You probably don't remember because they were, for the most part, so bad.

Ah I remember eragon and other YA ones, I just attributed them more to chasing the Harry Potter dollar. Fair enough in dnd ones.

I think Hollywood is still nervous about fantasy because of the 1980s. A lot of fantasy movies came out in that decade and not many of them were successful at the box office. Some of the films that flopped or under-performed included Legend, The Dark Crystal, Ladyhawke, Willow, Masters of the Universal, The Black Cauldron (animated), and Dragonslayer.

It's certainly been long enough that they could try and appeal to a new generation that isn't suffering from fantasy film burnout, but that relies on Hollywood taking risks and studios aren't often known to do so.

Malazan is pretty bad. Every situation is solved with a deus ex machina and the power levels of a plethora of characters is so far beyond the chart that I find it impossible to suspend my disbelief that civilization in that universe, or even life itself, has continued for however many hundreds of thousands of years it has

It's definitely not my favorite but I mention it because it does have a very dedicated fan base.

Plenty of good movies get made. If you aren't seeing them it's because you're not looking.

Let me guess you didnt see jojo rabbit, parasite, booksmart, midsummer , pain and glory, the lighthouse, or even something with a bigger budget like Ford v Ferrari, knives out, ad astra, or apollo 11. Then wonder why we get more comic movies, remakes, and Pixar movies
