For people who are doing a job not related to their degree or are getting a job related to their degree years after receiving it and doing an unrelated job, the degree only proves that they were once educated in that field. Banks are sitting on a lot of debt that could go bad and would do so if student loans were like other loans with collateral. We're facing something similar to the 2008 housing crash just cutting out the middle step of people walking away from underwater mortgages sticking the bank with something worthless. So like 2008 nothing will be done until it looks like all the banks will go bust under bad debt, taking insurance companies and investors with them. If you didn't really know what you were doing when you took a large loan from the government, that's partly your fault, partly your parents' fault for not teaching you well enough about personal finance, and partly the education system's fault for the same reason.
