No. I think they should handle the interest rate instead as that's where the money is anyway

That I can agree with.

But just the act of paying things back shouldn't be absolved.

Nah

Just forgive all currently accrued interest and then cut the interest rates down to like 2%

Then focus on lowering the overall cost of college and maybe making community college free.

Average FHA loan interest rate is 3.96%, no government college loan interest rate should be higher than that at the least.

But canceling student debt is dumb and will never happen.

It would be cute if you could place liens on peoples' degrees, though. Then if they cite the degree as a credential they would be breaking the law.

That a degree is just a piece of paper in many cases.

The government wastes money on a lot of things, making higher education more affordable would not be a waste of money at all.

The degree is proof of credibility when it comes to at least what you've been educated in (whether or not that knowledge is actually useful in the real world is another matter).

It's proof that you passed all the necessary classes, that isn't necessarily credibility in what you've been educated in. For people who are doing a job not related to their degree or are getting a job related to their degree years after receiving it and doing an unrelated job, the degree only proves that they were once educated in that field. Knowledge retained is different on an individual basis.

You're right. All those people that graduated with real degrees from college absolutely love paying those loans

Anyway, an entire generation of teenagers were told that their lives would be absolutely worthless if they didn't go to college RIGHT NOW. And they were taken advantage of by these predatory loaners.

i dont get why the govt cant just cancel student loan debt. they issued the loan and they owe it to themselves. plus it's not secured by any sort of asset, that's why student loan debt is so difficult to discharge today and you hear about parents having to pay back debt for their dead child or other horrible stories like that

Unless they cosigned (and why the fuck would they cosign on a student loan that they'll give to almost anyone) all debt dies with the person who holds it.

Possibly, but not for the little guy. Banks are sitting on a lot of debt that could go bad and would do so if student loans were like other loans with collateral. We're facing something similar to the 2008 housing crash just cutting out the middle step of people walking away from underwater mortgages sticking the bank with something worthless.

So like 2008 nothing will be done until it looks like all the banks will go bust under bad debt, taking insurance companies and investors with them. Don't think students will be the ones really getting bailed out.

ok so he needed to have people cosign with him or he wouldnt get the loan. it's still a dumb system to get what is essentially required to have a decent salary/quality of life in the US (BA)

No one was taken advantage of regarding government college loans. If you didn't really know what you were doing when you took a large loan from the government, that's partly your fault, partly your parents' fault for not teaching you well enough about personal finance, and partly the education system's fault for the same reason.

There is still a lot wrong with the college loan system as it is, though.

There's no reason the cost of education should escalate at 400%+ the cost of inflation. I mean... there is a reason, every prof answers to a horde of bureaucrats that have jobs created by nepotism, but kids shouldn't be paying for that.
