Just hours after comparing the persecution of gay people to Hitler and Nazism, Pope Francis gave a warm hug to a Muslim leader who thinks homosexuality is a disease and that gay people should be executed.

The same day (November 15), the Pope gave a speech at the World Congress of the International Association of Penal Law in which he said: It is not coincidental that at times there is a resurgence of symbols typical of Nazism With the persecution of Jews, gypsies, and people with homosexual tendencies that is what was done in those days and today it is happening again.

Ahmed el-Tayeb is the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, thought by many to be highest authority in Sunni Islam, and he met with Pope Francis for cordial discussions which included the protection of minors in the digital world.

Muslim societies consider these things to be diseases which must be fought and treated It is a rebellion both against religion and what is held sacrosanct by society.

Apostasy is a crime An apostate should be asked to repent and if he does not he should be killed.

The article says he is basically the pope of Sunni Islam, which may be the biggest single religious denomination in the world.

Don't act like he is an internet troll whose voice doesn't matter. His voice matters to a lot of people, and if the pope cares about peace among the world's religions (specifically the Abrahamic religions in this case), making peace with him represents a large part of that.

Whatever happened to being like Jesus? The pope is doing that right now.

It's an ideal that is foolish in practice. The only thing good people get from embracing bad people is a fucking. This guy isn't some random confused asshole. He's a voice of power for millions and he knows exactly what he is doing. He's not going to change his ways if you're nice to him and give him a platform. The Catholic Church was once just as bad as fundamentalist Islam, if not worse considering scale. But it reformed. Islam needs a reformation of its own, but cutting all ties with this guy and isolating him will solve nothing. The best thing the pope can do as the leader of the Catholic Church is work with this guy. We already know the pope's beliefs about Jews and gay people differ from his... the pope isn't going to get indoctrinated.

Yeah I'm not seeing how you could be upset about this. What's Francis to do in such a high stakes meeting with a Muslim leader? Shall the Pope be rude, scold and scorn his polar opposite in order to accomplish nothing other than (probably) inspiring him to go back to the Middle East and kill gay people out of spite?

Change is gradual, and if Francis has any chance to change the minds of more close-minded religions, it's going to be through meetings just like this.
