The timeline where they're in the Ocean Palace where all the Gurus and Janus get sucked into the time portals, the party isn't there to stop the Queen, Magus isn't there to stop them either. The Queen successfully summons Lavos to destroy Zeal and leave the planet super damaged, Schala is mentally broken.

I always wondered that, too. I guess in that universe, Lavos wins.

IIRC Chrono Cross explains that the previous time line was destroyed as a result of their changing things.

That timeline couldn't have been destroyed because humanity eventually re-progressed. I guess Lavos absorbed both Schala and Queen Zeal and left humanity to rebuild? But wouldn't that mean the Ocean Palace would rise up and become the Black Omen?

Lavos probably just kills Zeal and Schala then goes back to sleep.
Crono and friends fuck that up by using the Masamune on the MM machine which I guess weakens Lavos so that Zeal can control it or something. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's really hard to gleam details out of Chrono Cross' plot dumps because the writing has a lot of fluff in it, but from what I understand altering time caused the Lavos time line to basically be destroyed and transformed into the Dead Sea, which is kinda like a pocket dimension of distorted time and space. The occupants appear to all be mindless ghosts and shit.
It could be that Lavos / Schala survived in this distortion. Not the Lavos that Chrono and Co killed, but the one from the destroyed time line. --- The Legend is True! ... Copied to Clipboard!
