I'm rewatching the Demon Piccolo saga now. It's just so weird to see someone go into the final 8 of that tournament then transition into a harpy housewife for the rest of the series. I'm not saying she needed to be as strong as saiyan saga Yamcha, but there could have been a better balance.

What a stupid thing to say. She was very much an important character in the Namek saga. She complained a lot and...did some other stuff?

And after that? She got preggers and disappeared from the plot. I'm sensing a pattern... (Toriyama hates milfs).

The desire to be a normal family not always fighting could still be a part of her character, but to write her as if she didn't grow up in a less civilized village as the Ox King's daughter is stupid.

Apparently, Toriyama never liked her and intended for her to be a one-off. But anime filler kept bringing her back and teasing her relationship with Goku, so he felt pressured to actually follow through with that.

At least Chichi gets to do more than Oolong and Puar.

Pretty much every fighter in the show was written out in favor of Goku and Vegeta for the most part.

At least 18 had that fun moment against Goten/Trunks/Hercule in the early Buu saga and her inclusion in the ToP

And tbh it seems in-line with 18's character to not really care much about about fighting after she didn't have to anymore (unless she had to in order to get what she wants like in the world tournament)

What a blatantly convenient excuse for a female character to turn useless. We finally get a strong female in No18, but it turns out she's just a money hungry bitch who doesn't care about fighting. In line with her character? Lol her character sucks.

That's no excuse to completely ban him from learning martial arts, forcing him to study all day and being an all around whiny bitch. You have a very narrow view of parenting if you think Chichi is a model mother; no, she's just a stereotype on Japanese moms.

It really does seem like Dragon Ball goes out of its way to put its women in the kitchen, even if they were fully-capable fighters or otherwise were important to the story beforehand.

Chi-Chi, Videl, and 18 all suffered from this.
As did Bulma, but they at least brought her back into the spotlight with Super.
And Launch basically just dropped off the face of the earth.

And then there's Pan, who didn't even go Super Saiyan at any point in GT and was a rather weak fighter, despite the potential she showed at the end of DBZ (but then again, Goku did abandon training her to run off with Uub instead).

Everyone who's like "yeah but Chichi isn't powerful enough".

You realize it's fiction, right? Toriyama could have made Chichi as powerful as Krillin, or even more powerful if he wanted to.

It's one of the great things about fiction, you can write your own rules.

Come to think of it, DB's pretty much the textbook example of a work getting well beyond the scope of the author's intent because the parent company demanded it because of money.

Chichi's just one example of it, at the end of the day.

Chi Chi at the end of original Dragon Ball was cute. Now she's the main reason why Goten is probably gonna grow up a wimp smh. (I give Gohan a pass since fighting for fighting's sake wasn't in his nature).

Even if it wasn't in line with her character, when was 18 supposed to be useful anyway?

She had her time to shine in the early Buu saga like I said, and her staying to win the tournament is really the only plot reason why she didn't come with Goku & co to stop Yamu & Spopovich. And even if she did go she would have been most likely turned to stone by Dabura like Piccolo/Krillin anyway.

After that it would have really made no sense for her to fight Buu at any point until he turned her into chocolate at the lookout. Krillin sacrfificed himself so 18/Marron/the rest could get away. Maybe they could have her fight Buu with Krillin but the result obviously would have been the same and she was trying to protect her daughter obviously.

In Super, 18 was among the characters that lost to Beerus in 1 hit. Even if 18 trained or whatever it wouldn't have ever made sense for her to put up a fight against Beerus.

They could have used 18 in the fight against Universe 6, but the whole thing with Mr. Buu was supposed to be funny so I don't mind that.

There was no real reason for her to fight in the Goku Black Saga.

She had a pretty decent showing in the ToP.

So basically 18 was still somewhat relevant of a character, there was just usually no reason for her to fight the big bad after the Buu Saga since she was so outclassed at that point. Now if you say that in itself is bad plot-wise I won't necessarily disagree.

The issue isn't whether or not it was in line with her character. If her "character" is just being a distant, shallow bitch who just cares about money, then her character sucks. If all she does after her debut arc is occasionally fight and get knocked up by Krillin, then she shouldn't have even been introduced.

Toriyama came up with her and No17 because his friend didn't like No19 and 20; her very existence is contrived. Toriyama didn't like her and 17, either, so Toriyama came up with Cell. From there on, No18 was just absorption fodder; a damsel in distress. Then she does nothing of real relevance for the rest of the series. That's not how you write a great female character. There may have been in universe explanations for her uselessness ("she wants to protect her daughter", "there was nothing she could have done", etc), but the fact doesn't change she's useless. And no well written female character is useless in a story.

And when you look at how much stronger No17, her brother, is than her in DBS? No18, the female sibling, remains trash tier, but No17, the male sibling, powers up a ton from just fighting poachers and wins the TOP? It's clear these writers are sexist.
