A PAIR of gay penguins in a Dutch zoo want a chick so badly that they've nicked an egg from another penguin couple.

The two African penguins robbed their prize when no-one was looking and are reportedly now trying to hatch it themselves.

Representatives at DierenPark Amersfoort zoo in the Netherlands said the cheeky birds were caught incubating the egg last week, according to Dutch News.

"The gay couple are looking after the egg very well and take turns in keeping it warm," zookeeper Marc Belt said.

"Homosexuality is fairly common in penguins, but what makes this couple remarkable is that they have gotten hold of an egg."

Fortunately, the couple whose egg was stolen have since produced a new one, Belt added.

Gay penguin couples are relatively common both in captivity and the wild. Their nest was near the nest of the zoo's gay couple, who saw their chance and snatched at it.

Gay penguins of either sex are regularly found in both the wild and captivity.

For example, most of the penguins housed at Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium in Ireland are gay, and same-sex penguins from London Zoo were at this years Pride event in the capital.

Research shows that about 1,500 animal species are known to practice same-sex coupling. Gay penguins of either sex are nothing new, and are found both in the wild and in captivity.

It's not the first instance of gay penguins adopting eggs within the comforts of a zoo enclosure. Earlier this year, such a couple adopted an unguarded egg at Berlin Zoo.

Skipper and Ping, both 10, took charge of the egg after it was abandoned by a king penguin mother.

Zookeeper Norbert Zahmel, 50, said that when the egg was "put in front of one of the males ... he immediately knew what to do."

Zahmel said it was clear the loved-up pair were keen to raise a chick: "The pair have often tried to incubate stones. They even tried it with fish."

In other news, a supercolony of 1.5million penguins was exposed by satellites last year after hiding on an Antarctic island for 3,000 years. Scientists earlier this year revealed that a monster penguin species the size of an adult human once walked the Earth. And, scientists recently claimed to have created the world's first human-monkey hybrid in China.

God specified two of each species, he didn't say anything about gender. But since two male lions was enough to repopulate the species, the notion that a gay couple can't have kids doesn't hold water.
