- get rape and death threats
men get these as well on the daily
- gatekeeping and having to "prove" you're enough of a nerd to be included in certain communities if you're a woman
everyone gets this. See the moba games and fighting games communities
- men get butthurt if you don't return their affections, even to the point of ruining your reputation (sometimes "I'm not interested" isn't enough)
plenty of people get butthurt about all streamers.See asmongold

- no friends IRL because "nerdy" circles are mostly guys and you wouldn't fit in anyway
if thats true its because of streamers personality and nothing to do with their gender
- no friends online because of harassment and rudeness OR being unsure of someone's intentions
same as all streamers. Got nothing to do with gender
- constantly told you're ugly and fat if you don't look like a conventional supermodel or "e-girl" as they call them
see point 1

Dont get me wrong, everything you mentioned is absolutely terrible and should never happen. But none of it is unique to female streamers

Indeed, for ethics hardly play into it at all.

They're "entertaining" for money. Different people have different audiences. There is nothing morally wrong with dressing sexy. Even if it's a cosplay you don't really care about.

They may perhaps be fake, but that alone doesn't make anyone terrible. Granted there is a difference between giving the audience what it wants and outright exploitation.

Now if you want a truly exploitative and shitty person, look at that person who pretended to be in a wheelchair and asked for donations.....only for it to one day be revealed they can walk just fine.
You don't think that someone like, say, STPeach is exploitative?

On everyone's least favorite infamous imageboard, they're obnoxious with death threats. Get into a discussion and get into a disagreement? "kys". Post something someone doesn't like? "kys". It's obnoxious and such a lazy response and comes off as an admission of defeat. So yeah, it's not a girl thing, it's an internet thing.

The girl identity does exacerbate the issue because on the internet, you're anonymous and you have no reputation. What gives people a reason to listen to you is the ideas and content you bring to the table. Girls, by admission of their gender, gain a advantage in building their identity just by disclosing their gender, an extreme minority in these communities. So guys are generally going to be hostile to that notion.

That being said, I'm immensely proud of my Fire Emblem community as it's fairly balanced in gender (well, more so than most titles) and my community is civil, helpful, and rather close knit. Hearing about death threats is unheard of.

I agree that it's a bit harsh to label anyone who's hurt and lonely as toxic (would be nice if people had that same consideration for me in the past TBH), but it only takes a modicum of self awareness to realize that women as a whole aren't evil and out to get you because a twitch streamer didn't return your feelings after donating.
There are certainly people who do exploit their audience - like faking a disability - but arguably many streamers fall under the definition of entertainment and are going to dress more provocatively for their audience. This in and of itself isn't exploitative, IMO.

Well spoken!

This is really accurate. Nerd culture produces some of the most fucked up little shits.

What are you talking about? Nerd culture is just the mainstream now, and culture as a whole has been fucking people up for millenia.

Nerd culture is, by definition, not mainstream. Only certain aspects of it have caught on with the public. A lot of the stuff that we talk about is unknown or unpopular to the general public. You think that your average frat boy has ever heard of Planescape: Torment? Or reads comic books? Or knows of anime outside a select few series?

I mean nerd culture is certainly more mainstream than it used to be with the advent of the internet and social media, but that somehow hasnt made it any less ... toxic and unwelcoming if you arent part of the majority.

Its very isolating and alienating. Im just some random woman and I dont really feel like I can connect with people over my interests due to the toxicity and not really knowing others into the same stuff irl

Well said, but that doesnt excuse ruining someones reputation or sending threats because youre a lonely boy online. It just doesnt which is more or less what Im talking about

You're both right - but with the reputation ruining stuff - there just needs to be a bigger stigma against online harassment and digital vigilantism. People need to realize this Batman/Light yagame(sp?) Fantasy is unhealthy

STPeach is basically the person that began the entire cycle of hate female twitch streamers get. The only reason she became popular is because her streams would constantly feature fake nip slips, and she would always angle the camera in such a way that either her cleavage, cameltoe, or ass would be visible to the audience.

This attracted a lot of young boys and foreveralones which skyrocketed the popularity of Twitch. She then went on to receive thousands upon thousands of dollars from donations explicitly by using her physical image and playing games and having no idea what she was talking about.

so no, it isn't twitch streams and getting your rent paid for everyone with boobs.

as if these adult men are somehow being forced to throw money at internet strangers. god.

It's a little more complex than this. The complaint about Twitch girls is more about how they appeal to the desperate and lonely niche so well. The "kissless virgin gamer" archetype that, while a stereotype, is pretty common in the community.

Those guys tend to have social problems, mental issues, anxiety, etc. that makes them easy targets of 'fake' affection from attractive girls. Put a girl on a webcam and have her play League of Legends, suddenly that lonely and depressed guy is thinking "Wow, she's into the stuff I'm into, and she seems so nice, maybe I have a chance with her."

Which leads to a donation. And then a thank you message with a little hand-heart gesture from the girl herself. Which makes the guy feel good, like he's finally being validated by this girl he has self-proclaimed himself to 'have a chance with.' This leads to more donations in a sea of others from the same type of guy, all competing with one another to be the king of contributors so they'll have the strongest possible chance of 'getting with' the streamer girl.

Is it healthy? No, of course not. Is it the girl's fault? Generally no, but if she gets accustomed to the treatment, she may start manipulating her audience (consciously or not) to entice further donations. "Donate this week for a chance to play with me on stream!" and stuff like that. Guy streamers do that, too, but it's with a totally different context. It doesn't have that undertone of 'maybe you'll get lucky with me~' that twitch girls have adopted.

Me, I don't mess with that. I don't donate to, nor view the streams of, any specific Twitch girls. Mostly because the chat is...extremely depressing. Nothing but dudes hucking compliments and throwing money at a girl just because she has a nice body and a bubbly personality.

Damn. Spot-on.

I agree with most of that as well as far as people who are genuinely manipulative and exploitative, but entertainment by default isn't inherently exploitation, even if it is suggestive in nature.
