Robots come from the future to destroy humanity. Heroes in the present fight the robots.

That's all you have to know.

It's a direct sequel to Terminator 2, the others have been retconned into an alternate timeline.

Of course you have to have watched every single one of them and the series. How else would you get the subtle nuance the series is known for?

I wouldn't go watch the new one if you haven't even played as the Terminator in MK 11, to be quite frank.

You need Terminator 2, but that's about it. You don't even really need the first; T2 did a decent job of explaining its predecessor.

The others have all been essentially retconned into a billion and a half reboots and alternate timelines. This one probably will be in a couple years too.

You don't really need to watch either of the first two films to understand the new one. It's probably for the best if you skip the second one. Any plot details you've missed are discussed in the opening narration and later on through character dialogue.

This isn't a continuity heavy sequel. It's practically a reboot.

i gave up after salvation. only watched bits and pieces of the rest.

the series is shit and until cameron comes in and directs a direct sequel to T2 i wont be interested and even if cameron miraculously decides to direct another terminator film it prob wont even sniff the first two.
This is the sequel to T2. He is the producer and not the director. DF is worth a watch. 3rd favorite after T2 and T1.

@TC, you don't have to, but I say it's worth watching T2 at least cause there are spoilers in the beginning.

No it's a direct sequel to the second.

It contradicts the second one (and the first one for that matter).

There isn't any need to know information that will keep someone from being able to understand what's going on. It's designed for new viewers as well as returning fans.
