They weren't slaves unless you just assume Wonka was completely lying his ass off. They were paid in cocoa beans which is probably the most valuable thing in their society.

I'm pretty sure in the book Wonka made a deal with the Oompa Loompa King or whatever. They went willingly with him, they weren't forced to go. The tribe was being eaten by a monster IIRC and working in a factory sounded much better.

Hell, maybe they were better off. It's a fantasy world, they could have been living in some sort of incredibly dangerous hellhole.
