Why did you assume thats very common? Most parents dont instantly kick their kids out at 18. Its like an old school meme of sorts. Does it happen? Sure there are always exceptions. However its not common what so ever

I remember when I was 18 my dad told me I had to start paying for stuff.

He meant like, splitting Pantera when we hung out. My dad is an executive.

It's well known this is the American norm because the culture is all about independence

Back when you could get a job for life at 18, maybe it made sense. By the 1980's that worldview was no longer viable. People probably need help until their mid 20's nowadays.

Not really. In rural Alabama it's common to drop out of school at 16 and start working at the farm or whatever
