"I think the best option is Spirit Assist."

"Oh, yeah, the spirits," Raven says. "Oh, wait, I'm going to need to befriend a whole new cast of them, huh?"

"More than likely," you say. "We can take a few moments to try that after we finish eating here."

"Okay," Raven says.

You and Raven each take a bite of the sausage, and it's not bad. Cooked all the way through and well-seasoned, and very juicy.

The waitress returns again and already has your main dishes. You already love the aroma of the spiced custard and powdered sugar, but you also like the smell of the bacon now that it's up close.

You really like the visual appeal of this Eggs Blackstone Benedict. The biscuit is golden brown, the bacon's crisp and thick, and the poached eggs are perfectly perched on top of it all.

The two of you dig into the meal, and your Brioche French toast is fluffy and soft as you cut into. Since it doesn't have maple syrup all over it, it isn't too sticky or soggy, and therefore easy to chew and swallow.

"Which spirits do you think would be easiest to befriend?" Raven asks while carefully moving the poached egg off the bacon and tomato.

"I would think Nature spirits are more friendly by, well, nature," you say. "Plus, Nature spirits are about healing and purity so they can counter the more toxic inclination voodoo has. We'll find somewhere secluded with plenty of vegetation to make contact."

"Okay," she says as she peels a layer off one of the biscuits.

Raven clearly enjoys the light flaky texture that is surely well-buttered. You start to consider the specifics of your breakfast menu, and might consider a section for Eggs Benedict.

After a delicious breakfast, you ask for the bill and pay the $22.97 with a couple dollars as tip. Before getting on Shadowfax, you look on the map to find somewhere with enough nature to commune with spirits.

"Oh, Louis Armstrong Park," Raven says. "Let's go there."

The two of you hop on Shadowfax and head northwest. You park on the street and walk into the park. There are tiny islands with water flowing throughout the park, so you simply cross the little bridge to the big center island.

You rummage through your things and bring out paper for spirit diagrams and Raven completes the Nature Pentagram. She sets it on the grass, and with a magical spark, Raven begins the calling. A few leaves tumble over and combine with some blades of grass to make a tiny little body like that of a bearded man hunched over and wearing a wide-brimmed hat.

"Well goo' mornin', mademoiselle," the little leaf man says with a Cajun accent. "Ah am the Nay-chair Spiri' o' tha Gulf. An' how may Ah serve you?"

"Good morning, Nature Spirit of the Gulf," Raven says, taking her time decoding his accent. "I am Raven, and I need some help from you. My friend and I are going to look for voodoo-"

"Voodoo?" the spirit says in surprise. "Oh non non non, chere, you should stay faaar away from dem Shadowmen. Dey're not a nice bunch, belee you me."

"But we need to, uh..." Raven says, trailing off as she tries to think. "Well, okay, we're really just more curious than anything. But can't you help us just a little?"

"I don' know..." the spirit says as he turns slightly, grass-blade eyebrows furrowing.

"We could offer you something for your trouble," you say.

The spirit looks at you and raises a grass eyebrow.

"Wha you mean?" he asks you.

"Well," you say as you look around. "It's rather hot out. I'm surprised I don't see any sprinklers right now."

"Dey be sayin' it a drought," the spirit says. "I dunno nothin' 'bout that, but it mean no watta for dis park today."

"Watering alone won't help this patch," you say as you walk to blank dirt. "I'll use some Restoration magic and the patches in the park will be just fine."

"You can do dat?" the spirit says in surprise.

You gather mana and wave your hand over the dirt. Grass rises up and the spirit marvels!

"Hoo wee!" he says with a little jump and heel click. "Das pertty good there, boy. You c'n def'ly help da park dat way. But fo' dis, le's worry 'bout a pahticulaly stubbahn patch to see if you're worth it."

The spirit leads you off the center island and to the side, and you already see the patch he means.

"Oh wow, this is definitely bad," you say as you walk up to the almost perfectly square patch that's about 30 square feet. "Was there something standing on this?"

"Oh yeh," the spirit nods. "There were dem uh, dem portable out houses there fo' an event some time ago. Lef' dem there too long, now the grass is dead."

"I thought I smelled something here," Raven says as she grimaces.

"Well let's see..." you say as you work up more energy.

You aim both hands at the patch, but feel the resistance. You give another wave and then another wave, and finally grass starts to sprout! The spirit of the Gulf hips and hollers again, even though it's really just short little blades.

"Now, will you help us with the voodoo search?" you ask.

"Yes, suh!" he says with a salute.

"Thank you," Raven smiles. "But, we'll need to have a shorter name to address you by. Are you okay with me just calling you 'Golf?'"

"O'course, Mademoiselle Raven," Golf says with a bow as he "takes off" his leaf hat. "So, where we goin'?"

"Just down the road to start with the voodoo temple," you say. "Hopefully you can keep up with Shadowfax."

You go back to Shadowfax on the curb but Golf seems wary.

"Y'know, Ah don' really like ma-sheens. Dey noisy an' messy."

"It's alright," Raven says. "We can walk there."

"Yes," you sigh as you put up Shadowfax's kickstand. "We'll walk."

You push Shadowfax along as Raven has Gulf riding on her shoulder. You make your way North from the park towards Esplanade Avenue.

"So you jus' wanna see dem shadowmen?" he asks. "Cuz you curious?"

"Basically," Raven says.

"If you don' mind me sayin', Miss Raven," Gulf says, "but that is ratha weird."

"I suppose it is," Raven says with a small chuckle.

You cross Esplanade though it is a busy street. You go down North Rampart until you arrive at the New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple. But this supposed temple isn't much of a temple, it's more a small home being called a "temple." Even so, Gulf still shudders.

"Oooh, it leakin' outta there," Gulf says. "Ah can smell tha shadows as dey lurk about."

"They're that powerful, are they?" you say.

"Oh, yes, suh!" Gulf says. "Whoever in dair, dey haf extra bad juju."

"Then we'll be very careful as we go look," you say.

You approach the door of the "temple" and Raven carefully follows behind. Gulf seems to be hyperventilating, though spirits don't need to breathe.

"Gulf, relax," Raven says. "We're here, we'll protect you."

"Wasn't he supposed to help protect us from voodoo?" you mumble.

You go to the door and reach for the knob. You're a bit wary but you grab it quick and turn it just as fast to push the door open. Gulf whimpers as he crouches under Raven's hair as you all peer inside.

"Whoa...!" you and Raven say.

Gulf was right, there is a strong voodoo presence with just the visuals you're seeing in this room. Symbols painted on the back wall, with candles of varying wear 'n' tear on a table that is basically an altar up against that same wall, and the smell of-

"ACHOO!" Raven sneezes.

"Chicken allergies," you say.

"Yeah," Raven says before a sniffle. "Ugh, there's chicken stuff all over this place."

"Probably used in voodoo blood sacrifices and other such rituals," you say. "Probably should've expected that."

"Do you have anything to block out the allergens like you blocked out sound?" Raven asks while stepping away from the door.

"No," you say. "That starts towards the line of not being able to breathe."

"Well then it's about the same," Raven says before sniffling again. "ACHOO!"

"Here," you say as you give her your scarf. "Use that to filter things."

Raven wraps the scarf around her and uses her nose to breathe through the fabric.

"I think that's helping," she says.

"Lemme see if I cain't rem-a-dee tha situa-shon," Gulf says as he hops down.

Gulf steps into the building, rolling up sleeves and pulling pants that aren't actually there.

"Hel' me out here, Mr. Wizard," he says to you. "Start up like you was in tha park."

You gather your mana and focus on Restoration magic. You send the energy out and Gulf waves his little grass hands to gather it up and swirl it around.

"Be clean!" Gulf shouts as he sends the energy everywhere.

Shadows kick up like dust and you're pretty sure you hear a strange animal screech... But then someone jumps out from the back room, wild looking mask on his face and big meat cleaver in his hand!

"Exarmaueris!" you shout as you quickly use mana.

A pulse hits the masked man and his meat cleaver goes flying out of his hand and into a wall. He's very surprised by that and hesitates on what to do next. You quickly hit him with a Disorientation spell and he stumbles into the voodoo altar. You get up behind him and use Binding spell to restrain him.

"Lemme go!" the voodoo man says.

"Answer a few questions for us first," you say.

"What? Why?"

"Because I'm thinking you aren't allowed to have live chickens in this part of town," Raven says, "and there are a lot of chicken feathers and blood spots in here."

"They wasn't live!" he defends. "They was dead!"

But then a chicken comes walking out of the back room he was in, clucking all the way.

"Uhh... Thas not my chicken."

"Explain that to the cops," you say. "Or, you can explain to us..."

"What all this chicken blood is for."

"What you mean? It is for-"

"I know it is for ceremonies and things, but what specifically? Was there someone you were going to curse?"

"N-No," he says.

"Don't lie," Raven says as she leans in. "I can tell that you're hiding something."

"O-Okay, maybe there was someone."

Raven leans in closer, eyes starting to glow.

"Okay, dair was definitely someone!" he says. "I was goin' to help put a hex on tha mayor's office to sabotage things."

"A bold move," you say. "But since everything is just fine in the city, that means you haven't done it yet."

"Yes," he says. "It was going to be later today, during a shift change."

"Will your partners in crime be coming by?" you ask.

"No, I'm to meet them."

"In that case," you say, "where is your bathroom?"

"Huh?" both he, Raven and Gulf ask.

"Do you need to go or sometin?" Gulf asks.

"No I don't need to go," you grumble. "We're flushing the voodoo supplies."

"Ohhh...! Das much betta."

You keep the voodoo man tied up and pinned to a wall as you and Raven head further into the back of the building. The two of you turn a corner and find what might've been the kitchen.

"Eww!" Raven says as the two of you see chicken guts and blood.

"Ho boy," Gulf says. "Dis gonna be a lot ta clean up."

"I'm starting to think flushing won't work," you say.

"We'll just have to burn up the chicken guts."

"Really?" Raven says. "Can't dump it, so burn it?"

"On top of a way to dispose of something, fire is often a way to purify and cleanse something," you say. "And when it comes to something like voodoo, why not use fire to deal with the toxicity?"

"Das pretty true," Gulf agrees. "Jus be careful, doe, what wit mah flammable body."

You grab a nearby bucket and scoop chicken guts into it. Raven reluctantly deals with the bones, putting them in another bucket.

"Okay," you say as you and Raven bring the buckets to the sink. "We'll burn these and then soak them in water."

"Obviously," she says.

You use a fire spell and ignite everything in both buckets. Then you stand back as the guts roast and the bones start to crack.

"It smells like hot rotten chicken," Raven grimaces.

"Yes," you say with a grimace of your own. "I don't think I'll be having any chicken for awhile."

"So what do we do after this?" Raven asks.

"Don' forget you gotta fix tha other patches at tha park," Gulf says.

"Don't worry, we'll fix those," you say.

"But after we find our voodoo friend's friends."

"Right," Raven says, "they'll still be expecting things to go on like normal. And they'll probably come looking when this guy doesn't show."

"Exactly," you say.

"So, wait," Gulf says. "Are you like a, a couple supa-heroes?"

"Yes, actually," you both say.

"Oh!" Gulf says. "Well das nice. Never met no supa-heroes before."

The chicken guts and bones all look sufficiently disintegrated and charred, so you turn on the faucet and drench everything. You let those smolder and smoke as you go back to your captured voodoo man.

"So your mutilated chicken parts have been put to rest," you say to him. "But we would like to know where your partners in would-be-crime are meeting you."

"Why? You already ruined our plans."

"Yes, for one night. But obviously if you're willing to try once, you'll be willing to try again. We want to round you lot up and turn you over to the authorities so that you can't."

"W-Well, I'm not going to tell you where we're meeting," he says as boldly as he can while fidgeting.

"You sure about that?" Raven asks as she steps closer, eyes glowing again.

"Now, now, Miss Raven," Gulf says. "We can still find his buddies wid-out him tellin' us somethin'. Y'see, in tha case of voodoo, Ah can be quite like one a dem bloodhounds. All Ah hafta do is sniff'm out."

Gulf hops onto the shoulder of the masked man and takes two sniffs and a long whiff from around the neck and head area. The man is naturally a bit weirded out by a little leafy man sniffing him.

"Okay," Gulf says. "Ah think Ah got it. Let's go."

Gulf hops back to Raven's shoulder and then you all exit the building. You go back to Shadowfax and ride towards the New Orleans mayoral building.

"Ah can smell 'em," Gulf says as you stop at an intersection. "Dey definitely lurkin' aroun' here somewheres."

You take it a little slower as you make a right turn and start passing the mayoral building's front entrance.

"Nope, not here," he says.

"That makes sense," Raven says. "The front entrance has the most security."

You drive around and Gulf traces the scent all the way to the back.

"Okay," he says. "Ah'm sensin' dem pass tha door, leavin' a nasty trail as dey go."

"If they're already inside, one of them must actually work in the mayor's building," Raven says.

"An inside job, huh?" you say. "That makes some sense."

"We'll flush them out. Gulf, would you mind sparing some grass or a leaf?"

"Uh, okay," he says.

A leaf flies off a tree nearby and you grab it out of the air. You slip the leaf under the back door of the mayoral building, making sure to have the stem sticking out on this side. You use a little bit more fire magic and spark the stem. The flame moves along that and to the rest of the leaf. You then fan the flames and get the smoke going into the building.

"Oh so you're not just flushing them out," Raven says. "You're literally smoking them out."

"Yes," you say. "This should also empty the rest of the building so their potential targets are out of the way."

You step back and wait for the smoke and fire to build.

*BERR BERR! BERR BERR!* A fire alarm goes off, and it's very loud.

"Just a matter of time now," you say.

The alarm blares more and there are flashing lights.

"Dey headin' for a side door!" Gulf shouts.

"Which side?" you and Raven shout back.

"Dat way!" Gulf shouts as he points to the right.

You hop onto Shadowfax and Raven flies! You trail behind as you get around the side of the building, and arrive to find many people barging out of the door.

"Which ones are the bad guys, Gulf?" Raven asks.

"Hol' on, Ah gotta sniff'm out!"

You look around as various people in business suits run out. If it's an inside job, is one of the culprits among them?

"Dair!" Gulf shouts. "Da green plaid!"

You spot green and black plaid on a hefty man, with a man in jeans and a wrinkled shirt. The two seem to realize they've been spotted, and mostly notice Raven levitating, so they split up.

"Always try to run, don't they?" you say.

"I'll take the big man in green, you get the slob."

"Got it," Raven says. "Hold on tight, Gulf."

She flies after the man in jeans while you pull Shadowfax around. The man in green runs smoothly but not very quickly. You pull ahead to stop at the corner, and watch the man almost fall over as he slows to a stop.

"I'm on a motorcycle, mate," you say. "You might as well just give up now."

The man reaches inside his suit jacket and pulls out something to then throw down on the ground. *POOF* The item explodes into a huge smoke cloud.

"Really?" you say as you make another U-Turn.

The big man heads back the way he came but you get far ahead of him again. You then park on the curb and hop right off Shadowfax while his kickstand springs out..

"What did I just say?" you shout as you stand in his path.

But he doesn't slow down! He's building up speed!

"Oh boy," you say.

You wait for the last possible second and move aside to then trip him, and he falls right on the ground. You then use a Binding spell to cuff his hands before you drag him up to his feet. Raven brings the wrinkled shirt wearing cohort over in a full body binding.

"Why're you two after us?" the hefty man asks.

"Do you happen to know someone who wears a voodoo mask?" you ask.

"And had a bunch of chicken guts in his house?" Raven adds.

"Uh..." the two say nervously. "N-No..."

"You are both lying," Raven says. "But it doesn't matter, we're turning you all in."

"That's a lot to bring on Shadowfax," you say. "Let's just worry about turning these two into the authorities."

"And maybe this fire," Raven says.

You look and see the smoke billowing up over the roof of the mayoral building.

"It was just one leaf!" you say.

"We should divide and conquer," Raven says.
