What music do you listen to otherwise that you have trouble with the lyrics? I dont personally have this problem, but there's a good chance we're listening to different stuff.

I dont really set out to listen to the sort of stuff I have trouble making out the words of but a lot of the Pop/Rap and such that is popular.

I think the issue is more you approaching every song like a transcript you need to memorise rather than a, yknow, song

Like 90% of English language song lyrics are actually stupid/cliche/nonsensical if you take the time to read them, so it's probably best that you don't take too much stock in them and just find something that sounds good to you.

A lot of the time when I pay attention to lyrics (in Rap music) I find myself thinking "Ok, X does this cool, but Y does it better." So I just end up turning off X and listening to Y. Most artists are just a lesser version of another artist they were influenced by.

Why am I listening to Little Pump when Gucci Mane in 2007 did this better? Why listen to Joey Badass and J. Cole when Illmatic came out 20 years ago and still holds up just fine.

I personally love it when lyricist use entendres, similies, metaphors and humor.

we can all write songs/poems, but there's a lack of emphasis on writing techniques these days.

That is not accurate.

But unless the singer has an stunningly beautiful voice not being able to make out their words is just gonna be an annoyance through the whole song.

Because I know I dont have to bother trying to make out the words and can focus purely on how it sounds.

i like to listen to a song and let the emotions the music invokes let my mind think and wander in ways it normally wouldnt. I often do my best brainstorming when listening to music.

I don't understand a lot of lyrics. I have noticed that in like more than half of songs (pop, rock, rap, country, etc) recorded in the last few decades, a lot of the singers will pronounce the words in an odd way to make them fit with the timing of song.

Tbh you should write the lyrics to naturally fit the timing instead of forcing it like that unless the song its intentionally aiming to be off-beat, discordant or the like.

That may be a major contributor to my problem.

It isnt about understanding the lyrics so much as the lyrics are awful. But once you know the language of those foreign songs you realize their lyrics are just as bad. Yes I prefer songs without lyrics or older songs. Some good modern songs exist but they are buried in mountains of trash. I think the reason older stuff seems better is simply only the better stuff survived this long and crappy songs had a harder time ever being heard due to there being less of a platform.
