I know around launch it got a lot of flack for being super bloated and having things like level gating behind a lot of side quests, along with the enemy levelling being kind of busted.

I remember hearing about a patch awhile back that changed some stuff about it, but I'm not sure what or if any of that was alleviated. I was gonna borrow it from a friend but I want to know if it's still pretty much like that, because if so I don't want to bother.

It's grindy if you want to get max level. I have almost all content completed in main game and all DLC completed and am sitting under 200 hours

That game is an insult to the biggest legend in this industry, Mario. Honestly, how dare they name their game Odyssey. Play a real Odyssey on the Switch instead of yearly shovelware crap.

the grind and bloat is there, but you can just skip past it and do main quest stuff. put it on easy to avoid even more grind which i recommend.

i took the time to grind and do bloat side quest junk. then i did even more by doing the atlantis DLC. kinda not worth it.

Was there any point just playing through the main quest where you felt you needed to stop and level grind? Or did you do well enough just through normal progression?

Nah, you get a ton of exp. I finished the main quest around level 55 or so. I dicked around and completed the DLC and hit 99 easy. Just gotta take your time and do shiz instead of mainlining the MQ.

I never once did any level grinding throughout my playthrough, the levels come pretty regularly. Especially if you do any side quests.

Yeah, the level gating is a little annoying. There are points in the main story where the next quest is several levels above you and you're forced to do side quests before continuing the main story.

Thanks. If I do play it I probably will set it on easy just to skip past the more boring parts that may come up.

That's what I'd heard about and what put me off from playing it. That and the open world being too damn big.

of course. don't listen to the people that will try to tell you "oh, just do every side quest and you'll be fine" because it's just all a bunch of grindy, padded out fluff and bullshit.

Assassin's Creed may have gotten flak for whatever reasons before, but Origins is where the series truly worsened. Got this big ass open world, and this over-reliance on numbers and levels and shit and it makes the game into a meta MMO where the numbers matter far more than the actual content.

I will say the world is absolutely too big. It should have been about half what it was tbh. The main story doesn't even utilize most of the islands.

You don't have to do every side quest to stay leveled.

Show me an AC game that doesn't have collect-a-thon mechanics that's artificial padding.

If you skip the side quests there are many islands you wont visit and many stories you wont experience. I sort of feel like the whole point in these new AC games is to experience the world and not just the main quest.

Especially since the game is literally called Odyssey and is based on the source material of...well...The Odyssey lol

what i'm saying is that the side quests weren't necessary to beat the game in previous entries.

A lot of the side quests are really good. There's just so many of them that inevitably you'll run into the stinkers as well.

There were like 1 or two points in the story where I found myself having to level, but that just means doing side quests that are mostly fun anyways.

By the end I was well past the original recommended level for story stuff.

You can get tons of exp passively by using the bounty board thing too. You can accept quests for sinking x number of ships or killing x number of Spartans, and just complete them as you play the game normally. They usually give out tons of exp and money.

Lol, loved that one.

I also liked the whole sequence of quests about the "minotaur."

Also this, sign up for bounties that give you xp for sinking ships or killing Athenians/Spartans as you would be doing those things anyway. It should also be said that while there are side missions you also do get xp for completing "?" locations and that helps to level up to.

Again, playing Origins and Odyssey just for their main story is sort of missing the point. I think majority of people assume the side missions are your typical Bioware "go get me 20 silver ores" rinse and repeat side quests and thats not the case, they are all unique and some of them involve you going to islands where you wouldnt visit if you just followed the main quest. Killing all of the cult members for example involves doing side quests.
