Whenever I shave, it leaves a shadow especially in the soul patch area. I can't get a baby smooth shave anymore.

What are you using to shave?

I used to use safety razors but that used to cause bumps on my skin so I started using cartridge razors now

Improper lubrication or technique would be my guess.

What kind of cream or soap are you using?

All of these, and one other idea:
If you have a lighter touch after normal shaving feel your face and rub against the grain to see where you feel stubble, then apply a light coat of shaving cream/gel and shave against the grain on those parts.

I am able to just shave against the grain with water but I learned by minor errors long ago.

Get a proper electric shaver. I'm a fan of Braun shavers. And don't forget to maintain it.
