His style used androgyny and such but from a more classical angle, using surrealist elements and a cross between classic Japanese illustration and European styles. FF7 was the first time Nomura designed the main cast, but he kept it simple and stuck to what could be portrayed easily in the early 3D style. He hadnt yet developed his worse habits, but this was the beginning of a more contemporary anime style, and an emphasis on a cast who are mostly (but not all) the same young adult age group. Then with 8 we saw more of his habits taking form (lots more leather, zippers, heavy silver chains, more emphasis on modern attractiveness for the central cast, everyone is a teen). FF9 brought back Amano, which is why we again see diverse age groups, diverse body types, less pop attractiveness, and overall a more fantasy weirdness. Then with FF10 we see Nomura truly reach full Nomura mode. The hair is feathered and salon-styled and highlighted, the clothes have zippers and cutouts everywhere, pants are extra baggy, the chunky heavy silver chains and jewelry are all over the place, as a whole the J-pop influence is center stage. And thats what really made the distinction between Amanos art and Nomuras art. Amano wanted something timeless, using watercolors and surreal dreamy touches, androgyny thats paired with more haggard ugly appearances or whimsical weirdness, people ranging from little kids to frail old geezers, and taking as much influence from ancient appearances as modern. Whereas Nomura clearly loves J-pop. He goes for a more glitzy, glamorous approach to appeal specifically to mainstream Japanese teens.
