Amy Pascal literally was the person who pushed for Robert Downey Jr to be in Homecoming so yeah that's right

They had nothing to do with Infinity War and Endgame outside of the Russo Brothers, Feige and Pascal choosing Tom Holland together.

I never claimed that Sony didn't benefit from the MCU. That's why they entered the deal to begin with. It was mutually beneficial.

Yeah Sony brought in Iron Man and told the Russo Brothers to use Peter Parker as motivation for time travel and continued Nick Fury's storyline and all that!

Disney just setup the entire universe and Infinity Saga plotline for Sony's property to shine, but it was REALLY Sony who put all that groundbreaking work into making these movies a success!

Ugh. Just admit you have a blind spot because you frequent a gaming forum.

So if I give you some tips on how to do your job better, you would want to give me half of your paycheck? Sounds great. I'll even cover half of whatever expenses you pay for supplies just like Disney wants to.

It depends. Would I be making more money with you taking half my paycheck than me pouring money into doing another job and failing at it?

If so, easy deal for me.

Clearly not as the MCU just fell apart and Sony will go back to losing money making irrelevant reboots and shitty C-Superhero movies.

I literally gave you quotes from an interview that said they had a Plan B if he wasn't in it. He literally needed to sign with Sony to be in the movie because it wasn't a Disney movie.

Do you think Robert Downey Jr is some cheap investment that was no big deal?

Why would he be cheap?

Disney/Marvel pays him quite well. He's one of the highest earning actors in the world.

50% was a ludicrous number to start with. Sony was right to dismiss it. Not that Sony has been a responsible steward of the IP... but they own the movie rights fair and square. Why would they give away half of the profit?

Because their movies sell like shit, they put in zero work, and should be fucking grateful they actually sniffed this amount of profit with Disney's help.

Nowhere else on the internet are people shilling this hard for Sony. This is a PS4 fanboy thing and it's not even disputable at this point.

Spider-Man: Homecoming - $880.2M
Venom - $856.1M
Spider-Man: Far from Home - $1.110B

The MCU adds value but Venom didn't exactly underperform. Putting aside the killing Disney makes on merch thanks to the success of Sony's movies, the box office numbers don't come close to justifying 50%.

Venom is an outlier. Look at every other Sony picture. Most of that money was made from opening weekend people confused that it had nothing to do with Black Panther or Avengers. That movie fell out of theaters hard after that, while FFH is still going.

Spider-Man - $821.7M
Spider-Man 2 - $783.8M
Spider-Man 3 - $890.9M

The Amazing Spider-Man - $757.9M
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $709.0M

Spider-Man: Homecoming - $880.2M
Venom - $856.1M
Spider-Man: Far from Home - $1.110B

If anything, Far from Home is the outlier, not Venom. Comparing like-movies and looking at the complete history, it's fair to say that Sony's live-action Spider-Man profits were in decline and Disney helped turn them around... but not to such a degree that Sony is going to be comfortable just giving away half. That's not a reasonable ask.

The math says that Sony would've been making less money with the 50/50 deal than just doing things their own way. (see Polycosm's above me) So uh...it's not hard to see why they denied it.

They 100% funded Homecoming, and Far From Home. They didn't fund Civil War, Infinity War, or Endgame. Although they didn't get money from Civil War, Infinity War, or Endgame, either.

but did Sony participate in CW/IW/Endgame's production? would be silly if they worked on it and got no share.
as far as i know Marvel Studio's team is the one working on Homecoming and FFH, not anyone from Sony. and the 5% was their payment or something.

No. Sony did and received nothing for CW or avengers.

Sony did everything for HC / FFH except that they also had Feige as the creative director.

Anyone who knows negotiations knows you start high and work down.

Generally yes, but if you start insultingly high then you can lose the entire deal. When negotiating a raise, you don't start by asking for 1,000%.

That would be on sony to go low though. Seems like they didnt even try.

Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat. Sources said that Sony, led by Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra, came back with other configurations, but Disney didnt want to do that.

Sony literally asked to just continue the existing deal Disney already agreed to and said no. Then they came up with a bunch of alternative proposals and Disney did not even look at them.

The fact that they decided to take and take and take more and more and lay people off and cut costs everywhere except how much they get.

Certain people love to glorify the 50s as a time when everyone worked hard to get what they have. But back then the richest people didn't feel a need to take as much of everything as they do now. The difference in pay between workers and mega rich people has increased by such a huge amount. Back then they were already super rich and could outspend anyone else and have whatever they wanted. And now they have 10 times as much as they did back then.
On top of getting many times more money now, they also pay a significantly less amount in taxes than they used to. So they are screwing everyone on both ends.

And I don't mean small or medium sized business owners with a few million dollars, they are way closer to the middle class than they are to the mega rich people.

The rich pay less in taxes because they know and exploit tax loops. They also tend to own businesses and invest which has a lower tax requirement than employer bases income which is what most people have

And due to inflation they now make more money. I cant really hate in good business sense. Of you have thw knowledge on how to make more and keep more then more power to you.

I wasn't talking about due to inflation. I meant relative to how much their workers get payed.

Again: they pay a significant smaller percentage of their money that they make into taxes than they did in the 50s. And they take in a significantly higher amount more than they used to, all adjusted for inflation.

Another report came out saying Disney actually asked for a 30/70 split. Sony said no because they feel they don't need Disney's help anymore and the discussions went up to Alan Horn and Alan Bergman on the Disney side and Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra on the Sony side.
