A commercial helicopter pilot from Idaho has become the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly an F-35 fighter jet, a supersonic stealth aircraft.

Marine Capt. Anneliese Satz, a 29-year-old Boise native, completed her training program this past June at South Carolinas Air Station Beaufort, the Marine Corps announced last week. Satzs training lasted four years, taking her to bases in Florida, Texas and Mississippi.

The first flight in an F-35 is by yourself, Satz said. "The syllabus thoroughly prepares you for that first time you take off and for every flight after that, its an exhilarating experience."

Now, with over 300 flight hours under her belt, Satz is set to pilot the F-35B Lightning II as part of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, the Green Knights, in Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft is designed to operate from short-field bases and near front-line combat zones, the Corps said.

Satz said her time flying a commercial Robinson R44 Helicopter prepared her for a career as a military pilot. She also thanked her instructors and other members of her training squadron.

Women have only been allowed to fly in the Marines since 1993, when pilot positions were first made available to women, Military.com reported.

The first woman to fly for the Marine Corps was then-2nd Lt. Sarah Deal, who piloted a heavy-lift helicopter in 1995, according to the outlet. In 2001, Capt. Vernice Armour became the first black female Marine pilot, flying an AH-1W Cobra.

It makes me sad that Brie Larson is a household name but no one knows who this girl is. She's the real thing. Not pretend. This is actual empowerment, kicking ass and taking names.

In a strange way I think it's pathetic that women get credit for being the "first ever", but men never do. But only because I see everyone as equal, so I don't know why women are special

Wut

Yes they do

Fellas like Neil Armstrong, Edmund Hillary and Yuri Gagarin are household names.

And it wasn't illegal for them to do stuff on top of being told daily that they are inferior and can't do it. Women couldn't be military pilots until 1993. You dont thin that means anything?

You'll have to try out, get rejected because you suck at basketball, and then sue for discrimination like that girl that tried to join an all boys choir.

What does cute have to do with anything. Throwing around judgment of a woman's looks in literally everything is super regressive

Two ways. A. Be a transman who hasnt visibly started transitioning. B. Have your brain fully transplanted into a womens body.

The second is impossible

Props to her, that's really cool!

Someone who knows more about the military fill me in on something: My understanding is that women are far less common in the military than men, and that only a very select few actually get selected to become fighter pilots. Is this accurate, and if so, would it be safe to assume that the ratio of female soldiers becoming pilots would be similar to male at this point because of the numbers disparity?
