Guys. I'm scared.
I have a friend who is an artist and has drawn a lot of fan art of licensed characters (many from Disney owned properties-Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) He doesn't make money from his art, he just does it as a hobby. But I recently found out that even if fan art is non-profit, it can still be in violation of copyright law. I really don't want to have to say goodbye to my friend if he is going to prison for drawing copyrighted characters. He thought that if it was nonprofit he'd be okay, so did I. Why are those books allowed hmm? They all have a disclaimer in the front that says its for law enforcement education purposes only. Content makers tend to tacitly encourage fan art (as long as it's not being made for profit) because it serves as publicity for their works and helps maintain community interest. Under the letter of the law it's illegal but very few companies would punish someone for making fan art that they're not profiting from.
