I had never heard of this shooting before. Up until then, I think it was the most deadly mass shooting in US history, i.e. the most people killed. The reason for the shooting was unknown, but it's highly likely that the shooter had something wrong with his mental health.

Is this a well-known shooting? Is it still talked about a little, in America? Of course, you might argue that the Las Vegas shooting, which had 60 people killed, is rarely mentioned anymore, and that was only 2017, so why would people still talk much about this. The zeitgeist of America is very worrying.

For some reason, of all the mass shootings Ive read about through the years, this one stuck with me the most; insanely horrific series of events.

But yeah, people dont talk about it that much anymore, oddly enough.

On July 15, 1984, James Huberty commented to his wife, Etna, that he suspected he might have a mental problem.[1] Two days later, on the morning of July 17, he called a mental health clinic requesting an appointment. Leaving his contact details with the receptionist, he was assured the clinic would return his call within hours. According to his wife, he sat quietly beside the telephone for several hours, awaiting the return call, before abruptly walking out of the family home and riding to an unknown destination on his motorcycle. Unbeknownst to Huberty, the receptionist had misspelled his name as "Shouberty." His polite demeanor conveyed no sense of urgency to the operator; therefore, she logged the call as a "non-crisis" inquiry, to be handled within 48 hours.[3] Approximately one hour later, Huberty returned home in a contented mood. After eating dinner, Huberty, his wife, and their two daughters (aged 12 and 10) cycled to a nearby park. Later that evening, he and Etna watched a film together on their television.

The following morningWednesday, July 18Huberty took his wife and daughters to the San Diego Zoo.[4] In the course of the walk, Huberty told his wife that he believed that his life was effectively over. Referring to the mental health clinic's failure to return his phone call the previous day, he said, "Well, society had their chance."[1][5][6] After eating lunch at a McDonald's restaurant in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego, the Hubertys returned home.

Shortly thereafter, Huberty walked into his bedroom as his wife lay on the bed tired from the heat of the day. He changed his clothing by putting on a red T-shirt and green camouflage slacks. He then leaned toward her and said, "I want to kiss you goodbye."[7] Etna asked him where he was going, to which he replied he was "going hunting... hunting for humans."[8][n 1] Carrying a bundle wrapped in a checkered blanket, Huberty looked toward his elder daughter, Zelia, as he walked toward the front door of the family home and said, "Goodbye. I won't be back." He drove down San Ysidro Boulevard. According to eyewitnesses, he drove first toward the Big Bear supermarket and then toward a U.S. Post Office branch,[10] before entering the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant about 200 yards (180 m) from his apartment.

Not really related but a commuter plane went down into a neighborhood near that same are in 1978.
Flight PSA 182. Went down about 10-12 miles up the 805 from the McDonalds shooting.

Look it up if you've never heard about it. There's a real picture of the plane in flames going down.

What makes it worse is that at the time, SDPD SWAT outfits were black t-shirts & camo pants, which is exactly what Huberty had been wearing. After he was killed and they came in to clear the scene, some of the wounded thought they were his accomplices and continued to play dead for several minutes until the paramedics were allowed entrance.

Now theres the real crime.

Anyway... theres also that mass shooting from that bell tower. And there must have been some mass shootings at post offices because as a kid we use to say, going postal. Funny how no one uses that expression anymore.

There were clearly mass shootings before Columbine. They were just a whole lot less frequent.

Horrifying fact about that one: one of the people he shot was a woman who was 8 months pregnant. Shot her in the abdomen. She lived. Her son didn't.

The baby who died was an 8-month old boy; a 4-month-old girl was shot outside the McDonald's, but she & her parents miraculously all survived, and you can hear her story here:

One of the deadliest school shootings in us history was in 1966.

Also school shootings in the us literally date back to like the 1870s.

Overlooking those facts seems way stranger to me tbh.
