I think the reasoning was that it was overly-ambitious, and companies couldn't hit the goal.

That being said, glad to see that some of the manufacturers (even if only 30% for now) are going to be able to improve to that level.

If auto makers want to go to 50mpg, why do they need to make a deal with California?

I don't... get it.

If they just make it fine for CA, then it's fine for the rest. Makes more sense than to have what they've done for a long time and have a CA engine, NA engine, and errbody else engine. Usually it just comes down to the ecu, but there could be other differences.

There's a reason why some never even made it to america, because who needs bumpers and emission restrictions.

It wouldn't do much to lower air emissions. The cars with higher fuel economy doesn't reduce emissions that much. Plus new cars that get 50 mpg are a lot more expensive than new cars that get 35 mpg, so less people will buy these cars and just stick with older, less safe, less efficient cars.

I think you're misrepresenting what's going on here. Nobody cares about California having their own standard. The problem became that President Obama decided to mandate the national standard to be whatever CARB wanted.

There is no need for that. If carmakers want to make their cars hit a higher standard, they can go right ahead - that's a good thing. I do, however, don't see a need for federal mandates to mirror California.

You also realize that means less consumption which means less emissions in the creation of the fuel right?

Less people buying the newer cars because they are more expensive wouldn't effect fuel demand.

Ah, if that's the case then 50 is a bit optimistic. 40 would be more attainable.

Also I don't know why, but I was just reminded of the guy who would daily an F-750* pick-up. Spent 500+ in gas every week. Didn't even haul anything, just used it to commute and everything else a FIAT 500 could do... simply because he could.

what a champ

*Just realised it was actually a 750, either way it was unneeded.

Well, they really can't do anything about it, so what's your point?

Also, no other state adopts CARB standards. That's why there are 'California-only' models and '49-state' models.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_emission_standards

Due to its preexisting standards and particularly severe motor vehicle air pollution problems in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the U.S. state of California has special dispensation from the federal government to promulgate its own automobile emissions standards. Other states may choose to follow either the national standard or the stricter California standards. The states that have adopted the California standards are: Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico (2011 model year and later), New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia.[1][2][3] Such states are frequently referred to as "CARB states" in automotive discussions because the regulations are defined by the California Air Resources Board.

The EPA has adopted the California emissions standards as a national standard by the 2016 model year[4] and is collaborating with California regulators on stricter national emissions standards for model years 20172025.[5]
