As if they were all Z-List super heroes before the MCU?

Like...Iron Man/Thor/Cap were at best C list but they still popped up in video games and toy lines and stuff. Iron Man had his own cartoon ffs.

I don't think I've ever seen Shang Chi in a video game or Marvel cartoon in my life.

Yeah, but people didn't equate Cap/Thor/Iron Man with the Guardians back then.

I'm not saying Shang Chi/Eternals will bomb. I'm asking why suddenly everyone is revising history to make it seem like Cap/Thor/Iron Man were unknown before their movies.

Because a ton of fans really only liked Spider-Man and X-Men before the MCU and thus everyone was some unknown entity before their movies.

I haven't seen anyone saying this. I've seen comparisons of the Guardians to them though, which does make more sense at least.

Cap was a c lister? wut

Hes one of a handful of heroes everyone knew pre-MCU. Him, Hulk, Spider-Man, and maybe Wolverine were well ingrained into pop culture.

Plus Marvel took the z list guardians and made them a household name. Lets not be quick to judge.

I don't know why I put "at best" I meant to put "at worst". I was still waking up.

But still, I'm talking mainstream appeal not comic book appeal. In comic books Cap and Iron Man were definitely A list IMO.

But when it comes to mainstream appeal

Hulk, Spider-Man, Main X-Men (especially Wolverine) were A-List. Hulk due to his live action show, Spider-Man due to numerous cartoons and X-Men due to high amount of comic exposure + 90's cartoon.

I would also put Blade in here due to his film, but it's kind of an outlier due to most not realizing he was a comic book property.

Anyone who got their own cartoon, movie or toy line were B list, this included Iron Man, Captain America, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, Punisher, Daredevil and probably others I'm not thinking of at the moment.

Thor was definitely C list as far as mainstream appeal goes. He'd show up in cartoons and films and toylines so people had an idea of him but he never really broke out to get his own stuff. I wouldn't argue with him being the B list just because he showed up in so much stuff but I feel like being a comic book fan I have a bias.

Iron Man was definitely a C lister prior to the movies. He was considered a rather goofy character despite having his own (solid) Saturday morning cartoon...and catchy ass theme song to boot. His suit wasn't nearly as badass as it is designed now. It used to look awful.

Except Iron Man was not. He was a stable character in Marvel video games during the 90s. He was especially popular in Marvel Super Heroes made by the video game company in the world: Capcom.

That's true the Marvel Vs Capcom games did help. And the Proton Cannon was kind of a "meme" weapon at the time.

I guess it's because there's doubt as to how much their limited level in common culture contributed to the movies success as compared to making it with complete unknowns. That is to ask: did memories of things on the comic rack or video game appearances lead some people to see the movie, or could they have lead with Drakhawk and achieve the same results?

If the latter, Marvel has little to worry about. If the former, leading with character even comics fans aren't that up on is a risk. Even GotG at least had a well received book going on when the movie was greenlit. Shang Chi is a remnant of a film style they don't do much anymore, and the Eternals are still seen as leftovers they add to Avengers lineups to pad things out.

Not saying they'll bomb. But I have doubts.
