A parent bird has been spotted feeding its chick a cigarette butt, highlighting environmental concerns and prompting a wave of anger at careless smokers.

The black skimmer bird was photographed at a beach in Florida, US, picking the butt up and putting it in the babys mouth.

Karen Mason, who took the photographs, issued a simple plea as she posted the pictures online: If you smoke, please dont leave your butts behind.

She added: Its time we cleaned up our beaches and stopped treating them like one giant ash tray. #nobuttsforbabies.

Commenters endorsed her plea, saying the sight was heartbreaking and devastating.

As a smoker, Ive never understood the people who dont properly dispose of their cigarette butts.

I am surprised that this birds natural instincts didnt stop her from feeding one to her baby, though. Maybe she was sabotaging a rival bird family?

What makes you think it's a natural instinct for birds to recognize food from food-shaping garbage?

Perhaps but then wouldnt they constantly be eating toxic crap willy nilly? I feel like there must be some sort of more elaborate sensory identification system for even the lowest intelligence animals.

When I got hired at my apartment complex, part of my first week of grunt work was cleaning up the cigarette butts in the parking lot.

40 years worth of cigarette butts. Thousands, if not tens of thousands. It was goddamn insane. They were so concentrated on the edge of the curb it was sickening.

Sounds like a design flaw. What do you mean by heavy metals? Why would a vape cartridges need metal in it?

There's lead in them because they're pretty much all made in China. Lead is used in the process of metal shaping over there because it's cheap af. They're not actually made of lead. It leeches into the liquid too.

Anyway, California is leading the way on getting these banned because smoking stuff with lead in it is bad. I can see other states easily following suite.

Interesting, sorry that happened to you. My dad smoked but it never had any negative effects on me that I know of. My mom smoked when she was younger but quit a decade or so before I was born.

My big brother and dad are both dead smokers but they didnt die from anything related to smoking. And it never caused a strain on any familial relationships (though my mom always nags about how unhealthy it is, which we are all aware of of course) for us. (Though other things in life definitely caused strains, lol.)

If things worked out for you and your family, that's fine. For comparison's sake, my mom smoked through all of her pregnancies, and that was just the beginning of the influence it had over most of my life.

I suppose I should apologize, I'm not trying to damn you personally so much as I just have a lot of personal bias against the habit that makes me loathe it and I'd rather less people did it.
