Every once in a while, we all need a little motivation to improve our overall health and fitness .

Some encouragement and a little inspiration can go a long way. nfortunately, in trying to give its members a little nudge, one gym has hit a sour note.

A franchise of Anytime Fitness, whose headquarters is in Minnesota, sent out a mass email which took a wrong turn.

3fPq43o

Outraged, Mora Reinka tweeted the email and it quickly attracted a lot of heat.

One response read: "The ad industry is often vile, but this is one of the more appalling and shameless ones I've seen.

"To cultivate [and] profit off of body shame, which too many of us are already made to feel."

The gym has since apologised and explained it was an attempt at "humour".

egw7vOx

I don't want anyone to feel bad or ashamed.

I don't get how a gym is supposed to advertise itself without saying fat is bad though.

I mean maybe they could push a bodybuilding angle but this seems like one of those "friendly" gyms for casual weight loss and general fitness. Not hardcore body-building and athletes.

Is the ad just the picture itself and her response is the text? Or did they take what she said and use her name to advertise in response to her? I don't really get it. If the latter, they crossed a line by mentioning her by name even if not her full name. If the former, that's a really innocuous picture with a really innocuous message that is no cause for outrage.

the ad didn't really say anything that was wrong though. sometimes people need to hear the truth. maybe it'll be the thing that gives her the motivation to hit the gym.

I meant the pic on top of the text actually, not the lower one. So they used a direct response to her as their ad? Is she a member? That is kinda shitty if so. They could have left her name out of it and I wouldn't have an issue, but including even just her first name was a dick move.

As a marketer, I find nothing "offensive" about the ad. Not bad ad copy either, especially when you compare it to the generic, "Come to our gym in the next 5 days, and we'll waive our initiation fee that is absurd to charge in the first place", that 90% of gyms use.

Imagine getting offended about a gym talking about fat and fat loss.

I always lose weight when I take a job that requires physical labor. Diet never changes. I mean if you are legit fat or obese yeah diet needs changing. Excericse will help though. But if you are looking to just drop 10-20 lbs. Excercise might help.

And I see countless people absolutely kill themselves to burn maybe 300 calories in the gym and then they "reward" themselves by over consuming.

Exercise helps, but it is not at all the main factor in weight loss, especially for people who are obese. Telling people otherwise is setting them up for failure.

Well two things. Dont reward yourself just cause you did some work. Two dont quit just cause you reach your desired weight. That last point applies to diets as well. Seen plenty end up re gaining weight on a diet because they lose what they wanted then revert back and in some cases go overboard because they missed eating certain things and end up eating it more than they used to.

It's almost as if diet is a lot more important than exercise and humans are flawed lol. I'm just saying we shouldn't hold up exercise as being so important when most people would find satisfying results from just cutting out soda and eating smaller portion sizes.

Funny you tell him he missed the point when you missed the one of mine. Small amounts of weight are totally doable with exercise alone provided you dont eat any more than you already had before starting thr excercise regiment.

Some people are overweight a little simply because they arent active at all.

My eating habits have not changed once since I was a teen. But a bit into adulthood I gained 30 lbs because I stopped being as active. Now as I get older I realize my metabolism is slowing up so its either even more physical activity or dieting. As said anytime I have a job that requires manual labor i drop 10 lbs easily

And, again, you're missing the point. Exercise is hard. You have to commit to doing it. It's much easier and effective to change your diet. Neither are necessarily an objectively "easy" thing to do, but one clearly has the advantage.

You remind me of when people say it's as simple as "calories in, calories out." Yeah, if you exercise and don't change your diet in any way, you'd lose weight. Most people do not have that kind of willpower to not eat more. Exercise stimulates ghrelin. People feel exhausted after working out and end up eating. If you're the kind of person who can resist that temptation, great. I'm still gonna give advice that works for most people because you are an exception.

Have you actually recorded the weight you've lost and your eating habits? Also, just to be clear here, I'm talking about average people. The kind of people who aren't going to be able to quit their desk job to physically labor for a living.

Also, honestly, a lot of the weight you're losing when you start a job like that could be water weight if you're not properly hydrating.

I'm not saying you shouldn't exercise, but for the average person it should be like a 75/25 split between diet and exercise.

Im done with you lol I was talking losing 10-20 lbs not 50-100 and that its easy to lose that excersicng and you keep changing shit up. Ive known many who have done it.

You keep bringing up people ruining the excercise by eating more than they initially did lmao. Well no fucking shit Sherlock. That ruins the whole point of doing it. As farvas me bringing up jobs ive had thats me. Other people go to the gym like my brother who i might add went from 250 to 200. Im not discrediting dieting. Just saying its not as unimportant as you initially made it sound and that some can get by on it alone. Willpower is needed for both so thats moot.
