This lady I work said she made more money as waitress than she does as a teacher. The reason she does teaching though is because we have good healthcare benefits.

You dont need a degree to be a waitress though.

If you work at a fancy place the food will be expensive, which means that customers have to give you a large tip. And if your service was good or you're attractive then the tip might even go up. Its no wonder that some waiters make a lot of money

it really depends on where you work. I know that up here in Canada a waitress working a sports bar during playoffs can make off with bank. I've heard some of them can get out with more than 5k dollars. Usually its around 2 or 3k though, still not a bad haul for a weekend.

For real. I'd imagine it levels out a lot more during slower times of year, but I think even on the worst night your average waitress probably still walks away with at least $100-200 in tips. That's already more than some people earn in a day, and under the table to boot.

Would suck if you worked in one of those places that made you split the tips with kitchen staff. I don't know if most places are like that. I think it's a bit shitty though, since as the waitress you're the one that's putting yourself out there and delivering the service to earn a better tip. I don't think most people are tipping based on the quality of the meal or how fast it was prepared (or even how clean their dishes/utensils were, for that matter).

My sister was making double what i made as a teacher. That said her hours sucked and it definitely wasn't worth the money. No point in making bank if you never have time to spend it.

I work at a tiny little rural diner, and the rule of thumb here tends to be around $2.50-$3 per customer. During the worst shifts (winter Sunday-Thursday evenings) we tend to only average 20-30 customers, so we're talking about $50-$90 a night. During the better shifts (winter Monday-Friday mornings, summer Sunday-Thursday evenings) it goes up to 40-60 ($100-$180), and for the best shifts (Saturday/Sunday mornings, Friday/Saturday nights) they can do 65-100 ($160-$300). The most I've ever seen anyone admit to taking home was around $400. Mind you, for a tiny diner in rural hell this is far more than the cooks make if you can get good shifts. Winter evenings can get pretty lean, though.

Depends on the shift, restaurant location and population. That's a lot of different variables which make it an unreliable gig.

In my state the average salary is 56,000. There was a strike in a city here where the salaries vary between 54-71,000 between teachers.

They already get an hourly rate thats minimum wage or above. The waiters dont

then the better solution here would be to pay the servers minimum wage or more, and split the tips between everyone

It depends upon where you work and how the place handles tips. Sometimes you get your tips directly into your pocket, but there are a million ways employers screw you on tips while claiming to use it to make sure you hit minimum wage. So no, I don't think that all waitstaff is making bank.

Most places here have what is called a 10 percent cut. 10 percent of the overall tip goes to the kitchen staff. Which sounds great and all, but that amounts to pennies on most tips.

Mind you, they have the option to say "this is for the chef", and that tip will only go to the chef who prepared the meal.

This. I am opposed to tipping. It's a disgusting part of our culture. And I used to live in WA where by law they have to get paid full minimum wage (and it's the highest in the nation i think). But these fucks still demand you tip them. No. fuck that. I think living there is what made me so against tipping

Did you know they don't even tip in like almost every other country on the planet? It's an American thing

I used to be a waiter and guys gotta really hustle for even average tips. Dont get me wrong, guys can make a living as waiters but I caught on pretty quick that the food service industry is really tailored to waitresses more than anything. Being sexy helps but regardless, they can always pull some single mother line to their customers. Not hating the game, but there is a game to tips.
